The Thelma Scarborough age 15 fled debt and love by jumping into the Mississippi river, as dock patrolmen and seamen pulled her from the water after she leaped from a wharf. She said she owed 40 dollars from 7 dollar weekly wages and feared an impending engagement to a steady fellow slated for June.
Reports from New Orleans detail two tragedies and rescues. A 37 year old worker Frank Marcella was found dead at his home on North Broad Street after slashing his throat. A girl was rescued from the Mississippi at Canal Street docks after leaping in last night in a personal crisis incident.
The Isleta railroad crossing wreck brought the death toll to 21 after the night death of Tom Nieto Domingo Indian. Two bodies remain unidentified at the morgue. Eight survivors include James Lecky and Frank L. Mysers with two in critical condition.

New York Cotton Exchange Service reports world use of all cottons from August 1 to January 31 reached 13,076,000 bales, up from 12,694,000 a year earlier and above levels two and three seasons back. Foreign growths rise while American cotton declines to 7,101,000 bales, offsetting foreign gains. January stocks total 21,751,000 bales, down from last year’s 22,225,000.
Senate passed a House bill authorizing the secretary of agriculture to study cotton ginning and set up experimental ginning plants and laboratories. The measure now goes to the White House with $100,000 authorized for the program and Senator Harrison of Mississippi backing the move to speed passage.

A 14 year old girl, Sarah Eckert, confessed to fatally shooting Lloyd C Aker after he threatened her in his home. She said he forced entry while drunk and asked to shoot him, admitting self inflicted death at the scene. Community mystery resolved by a teen witness.
The U S Supreme Court indicated it would dismiss the appeal challenging Louisiana s 750 000 appropriation for free school books. Chief Justice Hughes and Justices Brandeis and Sutherland said the funds serve a public purpose. the court ended arguments and signaled an early dismissal likely next Monday.

Opelousas April 15 W T Gaines a local merchant killed himself by a pistol shot early today. Ill health is cited as the motive. His daughter heard the shot and found him in a chair. He died before a physician arrived. He leaves a widow one son and three daughters.
U S District Attorney Hart approves raids on business places suspected of dry law violations without warrants. He states private homes will not be targeted. Washington April 15.
Supervisor O G Elliott reports the 1980 census count for Hodge at 1367 residents. The town near Jonesboro hosts the Advance Paper and Bag plant and was estimated to range between 1300 and 1500. Other towns in the second Louisiana district to follow in coming days.
Accused participants include Denver Fitzgerald and A C Vineyard both tied to the Chatham raid April 13.
