The Monroe Chamber of Commerce elected new president Ransom and installed a new board including Dwight D. Vines George M. Boren James W. Moore Jr A C Breckenridge Ire and Nelson D. Abell II Ransom praised the team and noted plans for the coming year Powell received a grateful award for his service as former chamber leader during the session emceed by Mayor L Jack Howard Abe Pierce III was named to the State Board of Health and Human Resources committee by Gov Edwards.
Charles Roemer told business leaders that beneficiaries of prudent state management are elected officials. He noted an $80 million surplus in the $3 billion budget and said $20 million would fund Charity Hospital growth and new correctional facilities to comply with a federal court order. He admitted education remains a major problem in Louisiana.
Michigan health officials establish an advisory panel to draft lab worker protection rules for recombinant DNA research. Health Director Maurice Reizen considers using the department’s licensing authority to extend safeguards to the public. Wayne State University and University of Michigan faculty are cleared to proceed with such research. The move follows national and federal prompts for oversight of potential hazards to workers and public health.
John L Luffey is honored at the Monroe Chamber of Commerce annual meeting for outstanding civic and business accomplishments. The banquet at the Monroe Civic Center recognizes Luffey among local leaders with the David C Silverstein Memorial Civic Award.
U S Rep Jerry Huckaby spoke in Minden urging coal to fill the energy gap, arguing reserves must be developed as winters highlight the problem. He favors storing nuclear waste but opposes a federal plan to place waste in Bienville or Webster Parish and seeks to protect the Tensas Basin water project.
Walter Skelton, 44, head of the Arkansas Revenue Division since 1972, says he made two mistakes on his state income tax return. He checked a joint return box though he and his wife, Martha, filed separately. The errors were found during an audit by division employees.
