The Associated Press reports New Orleans prices for cotton futures after a volatile session. Contracts rose modestly with May, July, and December futures closing higher, while gains were eroded by weekend activity and price fluctuations.
Unfavorable weather from the south pushes cotton futures higher with May reaching 20.03 and October 19.73 as active positions advance. The market closes steady with spot middling at 20.50 and various near term contracts showing gains of about 10 to 18 points before modest profit taking.
New Orleans April 14 The cotton market moved higher on overnight bad weather and anticipated cold in the South and Gulf states. Buying from the South offset selling by New York bears as forecasts show heavy rains and freezing temperatures across Texas and Georgia threatening new cotton, with outlook tilting toward higher prices.
New York and New Orleans markets show cotton seed oil under firm close with futures steady. Prices listed for prime summer yellow and crude, with May June July August September and October contracts noted, along with Liverpool spot quotations and U S futures levels for May July October December January and March.

Livestock market news from Chicago on April 14 shows hogs active with 10 to 20¢ gains and tops at 9.40 for 190-220 pound hogs. Steers, yearlings, and stockers largely steady to firm with some gains. vealers mixed around 12.00 to 14.50. Sheep and lambs reach higher prices with fat lambs and wool grades showing new highs.
W. N. Wilkins aged 33 died at 11:45 last night in El Paso Texas. Parents J. D. and Mrs Wilkins of 209 South Third Street West Monroe survive with sister Miss Ethel Wilkins and brothers R. A. Wilkins Talalah and A. W. Wilkins Monroe. Body to arrive early next week for funeral plans to be announced.
John Strother died at his Philadelphia home yesterday. He was the son of the late Judge John Strother and was born in Monroe about fifty years ago. He had lived in Philadelphia for several years. Funeral and interment will be in Vicksburg Mississippi, time to be announced.
Burlington N J April 14 The United States Cast Iron Pipe and Foundry company manufactures about three quarters of U S cast iron pipe. Its expansion comes from sole rights to the deLavaud process in the U S Mexico and Central America. Formed in 1899 from eight manufacturers it now has 11 subsidiaries and annual capacity around 450 000 tons.

Huey P. Long outlined a reform plan at the Louisiana bar convention proposing to abolish circuit courts of appeal, raise the supreme court from seven to 15 justices, and create a separate state appellate court for criminal cases. He urged divisions of the supreme court, travel to rural areas, and a setup allowing quicker opinions with minimal cost. He also urged higher salaries for justices and argued for appeals on both fact and law in criminal cases.
In Savannah on April 14 a Shreveport radio inquiry reportedly cleared up the identity of a man who died in a Waycross hospital. The dispatcher for the Atlantic Coast Line at McIntosh, who refused to reveal himself except for relatives in Louisiana, was identified as W. W. McIntosh by S. McIntosh of Shreveport. The body will be held pending relatives’ instructions.
The Fashion Shop at 108 St. John Street promotes a stock reducing sale with notable dress reductions. Prices range from $9.75 to $29.50, featuring many $19.75 to $49.50 dresses cut to lower amounts.
An affray on St. John street in front of the Baltimore Marble cafe at 2 a.m. resulted in charges for James Bennett Jr Ross Coats Herbert Levi for indecent language and disturbing the peace and Jack Platt Herbert Fink for fighting without a lawful cause. Fink released on 100 dollar bond and Coats on his own recognizance. All to be tried next Tuesday in city court. H F Breard listed as witness. Reports say others implicated. minor bruises reported.
Maria Fuller formerly Mrs Arnold was taken into custody by Sheriff Ailton Cordale and deputies as a witness in the fatal shooting of Walter Barrett on November 16. Charles Pilcher is held under grand jury indictment for murder. Fuller, a bus passenger, described Pilcher aiming a gun at Barrett and told of pleading to spare her baby.
T B Bowman of Brookhaven Miss promoted real estate in Monroe and was arrested on a charge of embezzling 175 dollars from J R Burns of Twin City Printing. HH Raynor of Monroe was also arrested by the sheriff on court order for failure to pay wife alimony as Judge Shell ordered.
Glenn Burroughs was arrested last night by City Detective L. V. Tarver on Sheriff Coleman’s complaint. He is accused of stealing a Chevrolet coupe stored at a local garage but Burroughs says a woman gave him the car as a present.
H. Be. Wicks, who has been rooming on Fifth street, was arrested yesterday afternoon by the sheriff's department and lodged in jail on a charge of wife desertion.
The Business and Professional Women’s club of this city plans a fund to aid educational costs for young women. A chorus of 28 girls from Monroe including Frances Wallace and Martha Culpepper will perform Thursday at the city high school auditorium to fund loans for high school or college courses.
Washington April 14 The senate investigating committee plans to summon two mystery witnesses in the Teapot Dome inquiry alongside three others, to probe political and financial aspects of the Continental Trading oil deal. Separate conspiracy trial of Harry F. Sinclair in DC will resume Monday as defense argues lease negotiations were open and above board.
Leonidas Barkdull Faulk Post No. 18 calls a Monday night meeting at its rooms to discuss a proposed new home. Committees will report on personal investigations and recommendations as they seek a timely building decision. Commander Isaac Lemle urges full attendance at the usual Monday hour.
B T Miller was fined for drawing and displaying a pistol and for fighting. L C Winton and R A Knott of Ruston were released from charges of fighting and disturbing the peace after a car wreck on the Vicksburg road. An argument at Lennon Motor over payment led to a scuffle with Miller using a pistol. both sides admit drinking.
Easter Royal, a resident of 1712 Breard Street, was fined 25 dollars and sentenced to 48 hours in jail by City Judge Charles Schulze for cruelty to Irene, an adopted 12 year old girl. The child said she was whipped with a strap for disobedience and stealing, suffering a collar bone injury. The case records the mother stomping the girl and has the child placed with probation officer E L Wright.
The Delhi Lions Club hosted a Thursday evening meeting at Legion hall with a luncheon served by Presbyterian auxiliary ladies. Charter night is set for Thursday, April 26, inviting Oak Grove Winnsboro and Monroe clubs to attend with a planned feast and celebration.
Emergency crews rushed to a venue where a Friday night dance drew thirty to forty couples. The blast disrupted the event attended by many prominent locals as they tried to preserve order and assist in rescue efforts.
A gasoline explosion at a West Plains garage during a dance injures and kills dozens. J N Weiser opened the door to supply gasoline when the blast ripped through the hall lifting the floor and igniting flames over a three mile radius. Pianist Dimples Martin and trombone player Bail Allen are among the dead or gravely injured. Weiser is found elsewhere clutching the door knob.
