President Eisenhower weighs a televised radio address next week to reveal his veto or approval of the farm bill. White House press secretary Hagerty said no decision yet but the option is possible as Benson joins him for talks, with a decision expected tomorrow.
Democrats warned of sharp political fallout if President Eisenhower vetoes the farm bill. Senator Humphrey said the decision would be his, not Benson, and Luther Ellender predicted an overnight shift against Eisenhower if the veto occurs. The drive ties farm unrest to likely November outcomes, with some lawmakers fearing a Democratic Senate and House next year.
The weatherman predicts fair and pleasant conditions for Friday with cloudy mild weather for Saturday. Friday's high reached 77 degrees and a low of 49 at Selman Field per CAA. The Saturday high should be near the 80s with lows from 54 to 58 and pollen at 27.
AP reports Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III enjoyed a gentle stroll in palace gardens in Monaco as public celebrations calm. Grace slept in her future palace for the first time, while Rainier left for St Jean Cap Ferrat after handing the 200 room palace to Grace and her parents.
Louis Dykes, 38, phoned a highway patrolman to confess the killings. Officers found Evelyn Dykes, 37, and Sidney Shannon, 72, shot in the Shannon home living room. Dykes claimed estrangement with his wife over their 14-year-old daughter Anita Louise and said the wife jumped in the way, died accidentally. He remained calm and was being questioned with no charges filed.
Senate Internal Security subcommittee says its probe of Communist activity in New Orleans is not over though no further witnesses are scheduled. Robert Morris notes the investigation remains active. Witnesses included Robert Blanchard and Hunter O’Dell, whose testimony featured a heated exchange and frequent use of the Fifth Amendment.
President Eisenhower announces Gen Alfred Gruenther will retire as NATO commander toward year end for personal reasons. Gen Lauris Norstad is named to succeed him. Norstad is currently Gruenther’s air deputy and age 49. Gruenther has led NATO since 1953 and previously served as Eisenhower’s deputy when he was supreme commander in Europe.

In Birmingham four rear guardsmen go on trial Friday for the Nat King Cole attack. Two additional plotters charged with felonies received assurances of a nationwide defense fund to aid their cases.
Tension eased across Israel after pledges by Israel and Egypt to avoid new shooting except in self defense. An air raid over the Negev and a cross frontier exchange were the only incidents. A 13-year-old boy wounded at a school died, bringing Fedayeen casualties to 14 dead and 32 wounded since Saturday. Israel stated it killed 13 Fedayeen and captured 6. U.N. Secretary General Hammarskjold reported both nations pledged no warlike acts but reserved right to self defense. Continued on seventh page.
John A. Sibley of the Trust Company of Georgia told 1200 delegates at the Southern Forest Fire Prevention Conference that the South is backward in forest care. He called for full stands, better cull replacement, reduced waste, improved cutting, and disease and fire control. He urged education for all classes and outlined a three point Georgia plan: hire a full time forecaster, offer forestry summer courses for vocational teachers, and give 100 high schools forest demonstration tracts. Frank Ahlgren noted the grim toll from fires as 1,600 delegates from 16 states listened.
A 22-year-old husband shot his estranged wife 20, his mother-in-law 43, and his brother-in-law 17 with a public safety item at the Watts home 23 miles east of Antlers Oklahoma before taking his own life with the same weapon. Sheriff Wade said Thelma Watts returned home after separation two months ago. Thomas Watts, the brother-in-law, was fatally wounded as he arrived. The coroner labeled the deaths as a triple homicide and a self-inflicted fatality.
More than 2,000 bus and street car workers walked out in Milwaukee halting service for 200,000 residents. Police and deputies reported to work early to prevent traffic jams as city officials urged carpooling and cooperation to keep key services running. The strike, led by Amalgamated Association members, began at 4 a.m. with 1,570 drivers and 500 maintenance workers involved. Company president Fred Johnson had offered four times to raise wages by 16 cents hourly from a $2 base, but talks failed to reach a settlement.
The Federal Reserve Board raised the discount rate by 2 percentage points to 3 percent for nine banks led by Minneapolis and San Francisco, with others moving to 2.5 percent. The move aims to curb inflation amid a growing demand for credit as March business loans rose by 1.5 billion dollars from February.
Paul Bellamy former editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer who guided the paper for a quarter century died suddenly at 71. He collapsed at dinner with his wife and Carl D. Friebelin. Bellamy retired in January 1954 due to poor health and remained editor emeritus. He planned to attend ASNE meetings and AP gatherings, served as AP director 18 years, and was president of ASNE in 1933-34. Funeral set for 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Unitarian Society of Cleveland. Burial at Lake View Cemetery. Contributions to Harvard Class of 1906 scholarship fund requested.
Mrs Mae Lucky Ouachita parish registrar said 1028 voters who received letters to re register and have not done so are not eligible to vote in Tuesday's election. Disqualifications stem from applications made by others or incomplete registrations. Registration books reopen after the general election April 17 and stay open four days April 18 to 21. Literate voters must bring two witnesses to sign affidavits before registering.
Ouachita parish sheriff's department released the names of 16 persons indicted by the grand jury who have either been arrested or are out on bond. Among those named are J W Trichell in parish jail on attempted theft charges, Robert Newman on theft, J T Bishop in Houston custody on theft, John T Abrams in Tucson custody on two theft counts, Marie Trichell on attempted theft theft and perjury out on 3000 dollar bond, Thelma Jackson manslaughter, James Cotton aggravated rape, Johnnie Williams murder, J C Smith disturbing the peace, Susie Kiper perjury out on 500 dollar bond and others.
