Monroe residents convened at city hall to discuss preserving the tax exemption status that shields Monroe from parish taxes. The gathering followed a Monroe Chamber of Commerce meeting and featured speakers including Thomas E. Flournoy who urged public pressure on Ouachita delegates.
Mr Flournoy urged a constitution change to tax all cities equally, arguing no city should be exempt from parish taxes. He noted Lake Charles New Iberia and Lafayette enjoy exemptions while Baton Rouge does not. He called for 10 000 to 15 000 population cities to be tax exempt and favored electing police jury members at large rather than by ward to improve local governance.
President Harding met with T Dewitt Cuyler head of the railway executives association to discuss the general railroad situation. Additional managers were expected to follow. Amendments to the Federal Reserve Act and Federal Farm Loan Act were discussed at the American Farm Bureau Federation conference, with farmers seeking a farmer appointment to the Interstate Commerce Commission.
London April 13. The government states it will use the fullest powers of the state to protect workers who remain at work in essential services if stoppage is extended. It pledges support to ensure their position is not prejudiced compared with before the strike.
At the Ouachita Parish jury meeting a committee was named to present memorials to the constitutional convention urging a severance tax on natural resources and a proposal to end Monroe’s city tax exemption. The jury also supports uniting parishes to remove tax exemptions while praising parish agent Mrs. Jewell McQuillar for her club and women’s work.
Armed men attacked the east wing of Cork prison in London jurisdiction last night. The assault lasted ten minutes as guards repelled the attackers and the besieging party dispersed after heavy firing.
British labor groups plan a 8 o'clock Friday night walkout after the National Miners Federation fails to secure a settlement with mine owners and the government. Transport workers and railway men vote unanimously to strike.

Further south Turkish cavalry raids target the Greek fortified base at Panderma as Washington notes ongoing war policy debates. Senator Knox introduces a resolution to end the state of war with Germany, similar to the vetoed measure, with Vienna treaty rights reserved.
The Monroe baseball opener features Shreveport games set for April 16 and 17 at Forsythe Park. The schedule lists National League matches including Brooklyn at Boston and New York at Philadelphia, with American League games Philadelphia at New York and Boston at Washington.
Ouachita parish delegates Colonel Frank Stubbs and Captain Allan Sholars receive favorable comments in Baton Rouge as Stubbs chairs the Militia Committee and pushes the work forward.
Baton Rouge April 18 all committees of the convention are diligently at work on a new plan of government for the parish. A full report is expected on page three with details of proposed changes and debate.
Ouachita Parish delegates may attend a Monroe meeting to discuss local school issues. J. M. Breard Jr opposes action on a prior letter without full citizen discussion. A mass gathering of citizens and chamber officials is planned, pending Stubbs and Scholars’ possible attendance.
