United Federation of Teachers ends a one day walkout after complying with a State Supreme Court injunction. The strike, affecting nearly all of New York City's 840 public schools, ended after a seven hour executive board meeting.
Top officials and the executive committee of the Louisiana Sheriffs Association meet in Baton Rouge to discuss St. Landry Parish Sheriff D. J. Doucet's expulsion from the group. Doucet, a 25 year incumbent and charter member, said he was told his dues were returned and that he was no longer a member. He suggested racial issues as a possible cause and questioned Grant's authority to expel without executive committee approval.

The case against Ouachita Parish School Board Superintendent Ward and principal Hardin was heard over five days with briefer filings to follow. Maggio claims she resigned under duress and seeks back pay, while defense witnesses testified this week.
Sheriff Edd Martin rejected NAACP assertions that a Negro soldier was killed in cold blood. Cpl. Roman Ducksworth Jr. was shot by Officer Bill Kelly after boarding a Taylorsville bus. The FBI will review the case as a grand jury did not return a true bill.

After a three inch rain left fields very wet farm activity limited. Drying conditions expected in two to three days with a favorable outlook into early next week. Today will be cloudy to partly cloudy and cooler with highs 65 to 70 and lows 48 to 53. Friday also cloudy and cool with similar highs. Hail reports noted in several areas including Ruston and Collinston with golf ball size hail. Collinston called it the worst in years. Corn battered by hail in Oak Ridge. Monroe flooding on Louisville Avenue with cars submerged. Police noted multiple flood incidents.
Ouachita Parish jurors will receive up to 150 for expenses at the Louisiana Police Association convention in New Orleans April 23 to 24. Other parishes set 80 for Morehouse, 100 for Franklin. rooms at the Jung Hotel run 8 to 14 a night.
Five Louisiana lawmakers introduced bills to include enriched rice in the school lunch program. Sen. Russell B. Long and Allen Ellender and Reps. T. A. Thompson, Edwin E. Willis, and Hale Boggs sponsored the measures in the House, with Senate sponsors James O. Eastland, J. W. Fulbright, Thomas H. Kuchel, and Ralph Yarborough joining.
In Sewanee Tennessee a group of Negro and white Episcopal ministers sit in to end racial bars at the Claramont restaurant owned by the University of the South. They say they will return to seek service despite a burned cross and a darkened dining room. Leaser Clara Shoemate refuses service to Negroes unless they are students faculty or official guests. Dr Edward McCraee vice chancellor reiterates no policy dictates to proprietors or university officials.

Eugene Scott new West Monroe Chamber president united members at a breakfast urging enthusiasm with sound action. He warned that building a community requires planning, work, and funding and that no single businessman can do it alone. Scott praised manager Eugene Smith and urged more members to fund committees and grow the chamber’s budget for West Monroe and outlying areas.
Washington executives faced swift congressional probes and a possible anti trust action after U S Steel raised prices by six dollars a ton. Kennedy demanded restraint while six major producers tied to 70 percent of steel output held the new price at 156 dollars a ton.
The Louisiana State Employment Service reports non agricultural employment in Monroe rose from mid February to March to 28 150 with a gain of 150. Construction and trade drove the rise while weather and seasonal factors aided. Unemployment fell to 2 900 or 7.2 percent and job openings rose 217 from a year earlier. Manufacturing added little and stayed just above March 1961 levels.
