Preparatory to construction of the Highland Park Country Club at West Monroe work began yesterday to raze the old McGuire golf course clubhouse. F E Maxwell reported the club has reached the minimum 400 memberships but some shares remain. A bar was voted into the new clubhouse amid opposition from the West Monroe Ministerial Association. The city granted a 25 year golf course franchise with public access by fee.
An 11 year old girl told state police the driver of a car that killed her 7 year old brother jumped back into the vehicle and sped away when she called to him for help. Police say the two Betty Jean and Richard Kerns were walking along a road to a Bible class at a neighbor's home. Betty Jean said she saw the car coming shouted to her brother and jumped into a ditch. The auto hit Richard and hurled him off the road.
Funeral services for William A. Patrick were conducted at 10 a.m. in the Church of God West Monroe with Rev. J. P. Nolan officiating. Burial was in Hasley Cemetery under Hall Funeral Home direction. He died Wednesday in a local hospital at 68. Survivors include wife Letha and children Rufus Johnnie Lee Laverne Calvin four daughters. Pallbearers listed.
James M. Sims 56 of Ruston died in Alexandria after a brief illness caused by a heart condition. He was a native of Dubach and had lived in Ruston for many years.
Mrs Idell Haddox Miles 96 formerly of Monroe died yesterday in a San Antonio Texas hospital. Funeral services will be held Saturday at Alamo Funeral Home in San Antonio with burial at Memorial Cemetery. Surviving are daughter Mrs Berta Dell Porter of Shreveport son Edward Miles of Collinston sister Mrs Irene Mattingly of Monroe brother Jesse Haddox of Monroe and four grandchildren.
