Washington April 12. A $100 million emergency relief measure cleared the Senate 49 to 28 after defeating Senator Pepper's bid to raise the total to $159 million. Democratic Leader Barkley defended the $100 million plan as agreed with administration allies though he warned against higher spending. the House had already approved the sum.
The Fifth district division of the Louisiana field army for cancer control will hold a meeting at Hotel Virginia on Thursday at 3 p.m. Dr. John Snelling is consulting physician and Mrs. Fagan Cox is district director. Mayor Benoit will welcome attendees from Ouachita and outside parishes as the campaign opens. Mrs. Metcalf may preside if she can attend and Mrs. Rodriguez has been giving daily talks on KMLB. Invitations go to Red Cross, tuberculosis and health groups and other civic organizations.
Manteo North Carolina April 12 Sheriff Victor Meekins was stranded 40 miles from help in the sand dunes with no car nearby. He signaled with his thumb and a red monoplane flew in to rescue him taking him to Roanoke Island.

OSSINING N Y April 12 Richard Whitney formerly head of the New York stock exchange began his second year in Sing Sing prison today. Convict 94 835 he is reported healthy cheerful and heavier by 16 pounds. He was sentenced to from 5 to 10 years with a three year four month minimum. Guards say he coexists cordially with other inmates and has no trouble.
The Louisiana State Board of Parole announced the release of 23 of 26 applicants from the state penitentiary subject to good behavior. Listed are convicts from multiple parishes including Lafayette Tangipahoa Evangeline Madison Bossier and Orleans among others for crimes such as manslaughter larceny and shooting with intent to kill.
Tornadic spring winds battered a wide area between Atlanta and Birmingham, killing James Holman, 78, near Tallapoosa, and Robert Merritt, 35, of Fort Payne, at the Butler mill in Paint Rock river country. A Mt. Zion child and six homes were hurt, two churches wrecked in Montevallo, and telephone lines disrupted as damage spread across seven communities.
President Roosevelt accepted the resignation of Federal Judge Edwin S. Thomas of Connecticut. The letter dated April 6 made the resignation effective immediately. Attorney General Frank Murphy was set to issue a statement. Thomas had previously been summoned as a witness in the McKesson and Robbins case.
Washington April 12 Advocates of a barter system exchanging American cotton and wheat for rubber and tin estimate about 90 million dollars in congressional funds would be required. Senators Bankhead and Lucas oppose solving the surplus with barter, saying it merely shifts disposal of stock and won’t curb farm appropriations. They warn cotton could be pledged under the 8.3 cent loan unless prices stay near eight cents.
