A twelve year old in Russell builds a washing machine motor powered conveyance costing five dollars claiming a top speed of about thirty miles per hour. The item is described in a compact local vignette style.
The Louisiana Civil Service Commission refused the appeal for reinstatement of Truvie E. Minton, former Baton Rouge district supervisor of wildlife and fisheries. The panel found he was discharged for adequate cause after refusing a transfer, with no political or personal motive shown.
In Shreveport Louisiana on April 11 a caravan attempt to resume a Greenwood road paving project was blocked by armed police and over 500 pickets. Picket lines and onlookers crowded Greenwood and Virginia as 650 Teamsters workers were told to stay away. No arrests were reported though a V I A leader was struck. The V I A later withdrew and the state project valued at 120000 dollars remained halted.
The Senate sent the emergency housing bill back to the House and endorsed a companion measure to add 12.5 million new homes by 1956. Authors Wagner Taft Ellender lead bipartisan support. the emergency bill targets 2.7 million dwelling units largely for veterans by next year. A House Senate agreement on a compromise is needed, with subsidy funding for building materials a point of contention.
New Orleans April 11 runoffs appear needed to resolve multiple municipal posts after unofficial returns. Winners listed include Crowley mayor Matt Byatt and several city officials in Rayne Melville Opelousas Homer DeRidder Franklin and other towns with names of mayors police chiefs and councilmen.

An antique chair once owned by Daniel Webster valued at 1000 dollars was destroyed. Total loss estimated at 46000 dollars. Firemen could not determine a cause. Fire stopped before reaching Gulf Oil bulk tanks on the Riverfront.
New York mayor William O Dwyer announced Flushing Meadow as the interim UN meeting site and Sperry Gyroscope plant at Lake Success as the office headquarters after a 20 minute meeting with Trygve Lie Grover Whalen and New York City officials. The city will provide 1 250 000 for park and building improvements including converting a skating rink.
In San Francisco on April 11 a juror replacement halted the Alfred L. Cline forgery trial after a surprise discovery showed the juror, George W. Grissell, had prior forgery, burglary and parole convictions. Judge Kaufman allowed continued trial under a late-withdrawal provision. Ray E. Kline, another witness, clarified he and Cline are not related and recalled discussions of Cline’s cash resources.
In New York April 11 the Polish delegation at the United Nations Security Council charged Franco era Spain with sheltering fugitive German scientists and aiding new warfare research. The council considered Gromyko’s push to dismiss the Iranian question as the US and Britain urged keeping the matter open past May 6.
A rock throwing incident at physical education teacher S F Watkins’ home left C A Roberts Jr 14 wounded near the heart Jerry Peden 14 wounded in leg hip and back and Danny Boggus 15 with minor foot injuries Ronald Tomason 14 says rocks were hurled after a tease. Watkins says he fired at the ground and would not shoot again. DA Al Clyde and detective A C Howerton say he misjudged figures in darkness.
Louisiana state revenue department reports February retail purchases surpassed the $100 million mark for the fifth straight month. March collections reached $1,034,322 with sales estimated at about ten times that amount.
Kenneth Thomas Knobloch a 48 year old New Orleans newspaper man and author died yesterday at his home in Waveland Mississippi after a lengthy illness. He began at the St Louis Post Dispatch and worked for the Memphis Commercial Appeal and Philadelphia papers before arriving in New Orleans in 1922. He served on the dramatic page of the Times Picayune 1922 to 1929 and later with the New Orleans Item. He authored four books including There’s Been a Murder Done Murder in the Mind Take Up the Bodies and Winter in Majorca. He is survived by his widow funeral services were held today at Bay St. Louis Mississippi.
