In Dublin early today a twenty minute battle erupted around the Northwestern hotel in North Wall as civilians armed with bombs poison gas and petrol attacked government auxiliaries quartered there. One attacker killed several wounded two seriously. attackers withdrew after reinforcements.
The Ouachita parish police jury plans to adopt a resolution showing the parish supports receiving a severance tax share. President John M. Breard said Ouachita, a major gas producer, and timber parishes deserve the tax. A Monroe Chamber of Commerce meeting was considered to gather public views, but none has been set. The resolution will be sent to Governor Parker.
Fire gutted West Monroes Royal Theater on main street with surrounding buildings damaged. Firemen saved the drug store across the alley while water damage soaks stock and rafters. Total losses around fifteen thousand five hundred dollars with insurance figures noted.
Belfast reports say last night in Limerick a constable was assassinated and several police officers wounded in a spree of shooting. One civilian died and six others were wounded according to available reports.
London talks between mine owners and striking employees at the board of trade lasted an hour in the morning. The conference adjourned until 4 pm. Leaders of the triple alliance regarded the situation as considerably improved after the morning session.
Oliver Keith Ludlum of Bastrop dies at St Francis Sanitarium from burns suffered twelve days earlier when a gasoline tank exploded as he tried to refuel his car near Sterlington. Companion Charles Tackett aided but could not stop the flames. Ludlum, an ex soldier and Elk, also member of American Legion, survived by widow Merrimac Nair and several relatives.
Dr George S Sexton pastor of First Methodist church Shreveport will speak at a Monroe gathering of Methodist Episcopal Church South leaders about the financial campaign. R T Moore conference financial director will also address the meeting, likely at the First Methodist church Monroe. Albert S Lutz of Shreveport coordinates the Christian Education Commission program.
The body was taken to Bastrop this afternoon. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 3 o clock from the family residence. Interment follows at Christchurch cemetery with Rev. W. E. Vann officiating. The pallbearers include Lawrence and Joe of Panama, Reginald of Shreveport, Clarence of Memphis, and George of Bastrop.
Washington-Donal Ccallaghan Lord Mayor of Cork must leave the United States within sixty days after the State Department ruled he was not entitled to asylum as a political refugee. Secretary Davis issued the removal order.
The board of education meets this afternoon to discuss numerous school problems. City Attorney Harry H. Russell and Superintendent EB Neville returned from Baton Rouge to report on school plans. They await constitutional convention action on calling a special election to vote bonds for 400000 to complete two structures.
The United States navy opened a recruiting office in Monroe after months of closure. J. R. Harris of New Orleans leads the Monroe office located in the federal building as recruiting officer.
Willie Wheat was sentenced by Judge Fred M. Odom to one to two years in the Louisiana state penitentiary for forging checks on John Williams, a World War veteran. Henrietta Mills, accused of being an accessory, faces similar sentence pending further investigation. Williams, dying of tuberculosis, reportedly received $56 a month in war risk insurance, and the forged checks were drawn on his account.
Allen D. Albert of Paris Illinois, who conducted a civic survey, visits Monroe this afternoon en route to Alexandria. He was invited by Secretary G T Cross of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and will be given an informal reception at the chamber this afternoon.
Four small fires broke out in Monroe yesterday from chimney sparks. A Barnum and Pipes dwelling at 101 Railroad Avenue sustained 25 dollars damage at 7 15 a m. A. Blanks property suffered 5 dollars damage at 8 30 a m. The city of Monroe house at Forsythe Park was damaged 10 dollars at 6 30 p m. Joe Mangham residence at Oak and Vickies street damaged 5 dollars at 7 p m.
Nannie Jones an elderly woman was indicted by the Ouachita parish grand jury for stealing dishes valued at eighty cents from Mrs J W Collins of Monroe The suspect was arrested by Deputy Sheriff D L Roper and released on a 100 dollar bond Officials say this may be the only such grand jury indictment for so small an amount in Ouachita parish or Louisiana.
Fire of unknown origin destroyed the Stanley residence at Lambkin this morning around 11. The bungalow home of Mr and Mrs James Stanley was reduced to ashes as early discovery allowed the blaze to gain headway. Insufficient water facilities hampered firefighting efforts.
Fire crews responded to an alarm on Second Street and Ouachita Avenue at 1 30 PM. They found nests and rubbish burning under a house with unknown origin but no damage reported.
The forecast calls for clear skies tonight with fair conditions continuing into Tuesday. Temperatures rise gradually through the period as conditions remain dry and tranquil.
Doorn Holland April 11 Former Empress Augusta Victoria of Germany died at six this morning after a year marked by heart disease. Funeral services will be held at the Doorn house tomorrow for family members only. The remains will be taken to Potsdam on Wednesday for another service.
