Nashville April 10 A D Hopkins head of forest insect investigations told the Southern Commercial Congress that pine beetle damage in the cotton belt is preventable. He cited favorable conditions for pine growth and said effective control methods have been tested and proven, urging farmers managers and forest rangers to act to halt losses.
Isham Randolph of Chicago urged State and Federal cooperation on a comprehensive drainage scheme at the Drainage Congress in New Orleans. He argued problems inside a state should be solved locally, but beyond state lines the nation must act, citing Mississippi River cooperation as a model. Randolph urged a National Commission to approve cross state plans and debated Panama Canal benefits for inland regions. He noted large city expenditures on culture and raised questions about canal profits for interior states.
Special to News-Star reports Baton Rouge on April 11 Governor Sanders appointed John Dale to the Tenth Judicial District bench to replace the late John S Boatner. The move formalizes Dale as judge with Boatner’s vacancy filled.
Bay City April 11 militia took charge of the Republican State convention hall before the opening. Roosevelt and Taft Detroit delegations were kept outside the building. Delegates shown restive though no disorder reported at noon.
