Washington AP Nixon appears to have won an intraparty clash over a $100 dinner on June 1 as he tentatively prepares to introduce Dwight D. Eisenhower at a Republican Congressional dinner. GOP leaders had planned Eisenhower as the sole speaker but Nixon remains a key power broker amid leadership tensions with Goldwater Rockefeller.
Rental ads seek quick occupations offering three rooms and three bedrooms with washer plumbing and bills paid. Two four room houses with bath near the paper mill at Corner Penile Rd and Vinton St priced at $40 each. References required and low seven day sale promises mentioned.
The Licensing Board of Contractors in Louisiana halves its payroll with 77 inspectors initially listed under Civil Service. Director Fred Hightower Sr. says the cuts will bring total staff to about 30 to 35 this week to satisfy contractors. Delaware and other contractors praise the move as a practical tightening.

At the United Nations the special political committee approved by a slim margin an African plan for a diplomatic and economic quarantine of South Africa over its racial policies but failed to reach the two thirds needed for General Assembly final approval. The boycott demand drew 47 votes for, 29 against, 18 abstentions. the other Asian-sponsored measure urging separate and collective action was expected to pass.

A car go ship collided with a small fishing vessel off the New Jersey coast in fog and heavy seas. The fishing boat sank with one crewman found dead and three others missing.
Dr. Ernest L. Wynder of Sloan Kettering Institute explains a chemical in cigarette smoke may block the cancer causing process in humans. He describes an anti carcinogen and a five point program to remove causers and promoters from tobacco with improved filtration and selective additives.
The 1961 opener between the Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators will be played as scheduled at Griffith Stadium. President Kennedy will throw the first ball, drawing a capacity crowd of about 27 419. Weather officials predicted clearing skies after overnight rain.

Rescuers found three of four Lafayette men overdue since Sunday clinging to a tree in Atchafalaya swamps. Joseph Roy 26 Philip Henson 23 Woodley Thomas 25 and Lester Fosse 22 were brothers in law. Roy is presumed drowned. Surviving brothers were treated and released after exposure.
Wilbert N. Rideau, 19, was to stand trial in Calcasieu Parish District Court for the murder of Mrs. Julia Ferguson during a February 1 bank robbery at the Lake Charles branch. Court-appointed lawyers argued for change of venue but were overruled.
Eichmann prepares for trial in Jerusalem with a 15 count indictment accusing him of crimes against the Jewish people and humanity. The prosecution cites 242 Nazi documents and 34 witnesses, including some who personally met Eichmann during World War II, as the trial opens tomorrow.

An Atlanta to Chicago passenger train derailed after striking a fertilizer tank truck near Atherton on the Chicago and Eastern Illinois line. Seventeen people were injured, none critically, as wheels from the truck damaged switches and caused the derailment. The truck driver Henry George 40 was unhurt. Emergency crews and buses carried about 250 uninjured passengers to Danville division HQ.

CBS, citing Marvin Kalb in Moscow, said a short wave broadcast suggested the Soviet Union might launch a man into space. The CBS report noted censorship cuts and unclear timing with an announcement expected around Moscow time, later replaced by blanks and a brief note of an important news item.
The Dara wreck sank as salvage ships labored to beach her. Casualty toll raised to 212 missing, 560 survivors, with 580 passengers and 132 crew aboard. 60 visitors estimated. Two Americans among the missing, including L V Dorsch of Brooklyn.
Westwego police arrested Joval Duvek, 30, and his 24 year old wife Connie after raiding a trailer court and seizing a large quantity of what was believed to be narcotics. Investigators sent the pills for chemical analysis and charged the couple with altering a prescription pending the results.
