Jack Soble and wife Myra pleaded guilty to conspiring with Russian nationals to obtain U S defense documents. They face up to 10 years for this count, with a separate charge carrying potential death penalty if convicted.

The Ouachita River flooded thousands of acres around Camden Arkansas with a crest near 39 feet the highest since the 1940s. Monroes stage at 29.75 feet was expected to rise to 35 to 38 feet within two weeks. Main highways remained open though some rural roads were underwater.
Liquor possession charges were filed today against one student after a raid on a men’s dormitory at the University of Mississippi. A five member student judicial council plans broad action against four others with Dean Love warning of drastic penalties.
In Lake Providence the widow of farmer Pete Nevarro testified on day two of the Cleo Whatley murder trial. Nevarro died September 1, 1956, after a sidewalk struggle. the murder weapon remains unfound. The parish’s first white-on-white murder case in 15 years occupies the courthouse.
Gov Earl Long opposes issuing bonds to finance the state highway program and plans to reserve part of the Social Welfare Department’s $22 million surplus for other funds next year. He may veto two proposed New Orleans money bills and questions a state job for an ex-assistant police official. He argues raising highway funds directly is wiser than selling bonds, noting Louisiana costs and rising traffic from new industry.
Walter Harold Collins 34 husband of Melba Carey and son-in-law of Mr and Mrs Corbit Carey of West Monroe died in Buchanan Michigan from a heart attack. Walter Koch, executive vice president of The Monroe Area Industrial Development Corporation, received a surprise letter from an industrial development manager in a larger city requesting information to survey Monroe's resources. The writer, a Texan, claimed to have seen potential in the area.
Monroe police reported a car theft on St John Street near headquarters was solved after a suspect admitted stealing the vehicle. Residents observed the odd car Sunday and alerted authorities by Tuesday noon. The suspect was jailed, and the case was filed and closed.
Mrs Jeanette Kimbell wife of Dr W H Kimbell co owner of Thomas Kimbell Clinic in Ruston is named New Mrs Louisiana 1957. She balances motherhood with church civic and club work aided by a maid. Mayor W L Howard and Jim Williams of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce asked the Ouachita parish police jury to help form a regional planning commission at a 10 a m meeting. West Monroe voted to create its own planning commission within city limits. They proposed a regional commission for areas east of the Ouachita River or a Monroe city plus three mile suburb commission if regional plans fail.
Louisiana oil interests reject new gas tax, arguing no justification for an increase. Gov. Earl Long favors raising the tax instead of bonds for roads, citing high road costs in the state. Moore notes seven cent tax yields more revenue than the old nine cent rate, even with a one cent federal levy.
