Washington April 9 The petroleum industry war council urged the government to permit production of at least 300000 tons of Erminese rubber annually for civilian use. A committee began studying synthetic rubber, notably Butyl rubber, to meet tire shortages. The council urged immediate federal action to provide the funds and materials to supply a minimum 300000 tons of synthetic rubber for civilian use, in addition to 708000 tons already planned for military needs.
In the state livestock show Ouachita parish calves placed highly as groups and individuals. Ouachita won first in eight calves and top spots in several regional and northeast Louisiana events, with winners including T A Calloway and Everett Zeagler and multiple prizes for medium and heavy weight calves.
Moscow dispatch notes over 1250 typhus cases in Berlin in the last two weeks, with epidemic danger rising daily. Nazi authorities delay troop reinforcements at Kuestrin due to typhus among troops, per Soviet Tass.

Louis P Sahuque of New Orleans was reelected first vice president and E J Bourg of Baton Rouge reelected secretary treasurer. The convention adopted resolutions opposing taxation of labor organizations and restrictions on the right to strike, and supported collective bargaining rights for public employers and social legislation.
General George C. Marshall and Sir Alan Brooke conferred on grave developments in the eastern Mediterranean and the Burma front. Harry Hopkins and William Harriman discussed with Anthony Eden, the British foreign secretary, during the London talks.

Lieutenant General Jonathan Wainwright, then leading American Filipino forces at Bataan, feared he would miss the war after receiving orders to report to the Philippines. Colonel C A Dougherty recalls Wainwright at Fort Clark on the Mexican border expressing regret and worry about being sent away.

James Cauthron aged 18 of 114 Adams street and Levi Malone aged 33 of Brownville pleaded guilty in district court to assault with intent to rape a white girl and were sentenced to ten years in Angola state penitentiary by Judge David I Garrett. A charge of raping a 16 year old girl was filed February 12 in District Attorney Frank Hawthorne's office.
London April 9 The lives of 261 Greek men women and children were lost in a Mediterranean storm that wrecked two small boats fleeing Axis occupied Aegean islands for Turkey A Reuters Smyrna dispatch said one vessel carrying 236 people was wrecked on a reef near Kankada island 30 miles off the Turkish coast Only 29 aboard reached land All but 27 of 81 on the other craft perished in the same storm
Washington reports that U S education officials plan to teach aeronautics in high schools with 15 plus prospective air cadets. Courses include physics and math refresher training, summer programs, and a full aeronautics semester starting next September to speed pilot training for a 100000 trainee quota this year and 125000 in 1943.
In New Orleans on April 9 Mrs Cecilia Laugier a 65 year old widow and her crippled son George Laugier the second burned to death when a house fire after returning from a wedding party gutted their double cottage. Neighbors heard cries and Walter Theobald 57 and his seven children escaped. Fire broke out in the kitchen and the bodies were found in the mother’s room and doorway.
In New Orleans on April 9, the defense in ex Governor James A Noe treason trial argues irregularities in Wine or Lose company tax returns point to late consultant Lawrence A Merrigan. A witness testified Noe signed the 1935 return without reading it, while another described altering records at Merrigan's instruction and Merrigan's suicide in 1939 is cited. Defense aims to prove Merrigan responsible for discrepancies, with Noe unaware.
W G Gates a Columbia cotton broker was indicted on 12 counts by the federal grand jury here for unlawfully issuing fraudulent cotton release orders and pleaded innocent before Judge Ben C Dawkins with trial set for the next term. Charges also include Jesse Roy Thornton of Waverly La linked to a supposed ministerial false service claim while registering with Draft Board No 1 in Tallulah La. Indictments included two pleaded guilty cases of operating unregistered stills with mash in Madison and Delta Point parishes.
Nashville dispatch reports 24 year old Fort Dix soldier Douglas R. McCausland confessed to New York authorities that he beat to death 37 year old Alice Moore Nelson after an argument in a hotel room two months earlier. McCausland, listed as from Wichita Falls Texas, signed a 96 page statement provided to police. The man had been detained on a disorderly conduct charge prior to the admission. He is described as a 24 year old serviceman from Fort Dix. Nelson was identified as the deceased. Police officials named John E. Eubank as secretary to Chief of Police John Griffin as the source of the disclosure.

British desert forces countered Rommel's thrust with attacks on advanced Axis positions in North Africa. A British submarine sank a 10 000 ton Italian cruiser in the central Mediterranean after torpedo hits. Mussolini's command acknowledged counterattacks but said Axis forces repelled them. British Cairo HQ cited engagements near Sidi Bregish and offensives between Tmimi and El Gazala with Axis troops captured. Tobruk region activity noted. In Russia, Soviet reports claimed Hitler faced renewed pressure.
Governor Sam H. Jones says the Louisiana legislature will draft its own program at the session opening next month and the executive department will assist by providing information and helping translate ideas into bills. He notes only a few administration bills will relate to the war as legislators undertake the biennial agenda.
