The Senate approved a bill authorizing 50 million dollars in reconstruction loans for flood and storm torn districts in the south and east, with amendments boosting loan authority to 59 million and adding more liberal loan insurance under the National Housing act. Roosevelt plans a Gainesville stop to meet relief officials en route to Washington and may be joined by General Moseley. bridge opening plans for the Ouachita river set for May 1.
In Delhi Louisiana a school bus was sideswiped near Dunn by a speeding truck driven by O S Cox. The crash hurled the bus into a ditch but all occupants except one girl initially believed to be seriously hurt escaped with minor injuries. Cox was jailed at Rayville on reckless driving charges.
Senator Borah wins at least 2 of Wisconsin’s 24 Republican convention votes as returns show a strong Idaho victory in a Midwest test. With six tenths of state tallied, four Borah pledged delegates and at least 16 district delegates appeared elected, though a Borah candidate faced a tight fight in the second district.
Rockefeller Foundation provides 42500 dollars for a six year study on lengthening life spans in men and animals. Cornell University President Livingston Farrand announces the project directed by Dr L A Maynard Dr C M McCay and Dr S A Asdell noting previous focus on youth and early life.
Los Angeles clergymen plan action against diploma mills selling Doctor of Divinity degrees for small fees. Investigators report cases of fake ministers and dubious outfits selling ordinations and clairvoyant claims. The Ministerial Association will hold a meeting to outline a curb on these operations.
Mercer county prosecutor Erwin E. Marshall said about twenty persons will be subpoenaed for the county grand jury probe into Paul H. Wendel’s retracted confession in the Lindbergh kidnapping. District Attorney Geoghan in Brooklyn may have located the torture house in Sheepshead Bay and a motor vehicle inspector, Gustav Lockwood, was subpoenaed.
The Soviet Union assured China that its mutual assistance pact with Outer Mongolia serves both nations’ interests in the Far East and does not grant Soviet territorial claims. Foreign Commissar Maxim Litvinoff told Chinese envoys the pact would act only if the USSR or Outer Mongolia faced aggression amid border incidents near Manchukuo and the Japanese-backed state.
Washington reports the Reconstruction Corporation authorized Lake St. Peters drainage district in Tensas Parish Louisiana for 70,000 dollars. The action also includes approval of a school project as part of the funding package.
In Uniontown Pennsylvania workers lit a bonfire on Chestnut Ridge to consume the Sun Racer wreckage from a fatal crash. William Cunningham led the cleanup while investigators removed mangled parts for the probe. Fire also destroyed part of a Pittsburgh bound TWA liner after it crashed off course, killing one crew member and injuring others. Four commerce officials attended an open crash hearing where only three survived.
Pensacola Florida April 9 A railroad engineer R Vann says he will raise a 5000 bond for his wife accused of plotting to wreck his passenger train. Sheriff Gandy cited sworn statements by two negroes claiming she hired them to derail the Louisville and Nashville train at a curve near Pensacola. The plot could have killed 25 passengers and eight crew as inside rail spikes had been removed. two suspects and a man named Earl Travis of Castleberry Alabama face conspiracy charges.
In Huntsville Arkansas two youths Russell Beavers age 19 and Dennis Davidson age 17 are jailed on murder charges after a six year old boy drank a half pint of moonshine whisky and died shortly after. The boy was lured from his home by the pair according to sheriff Virgil Weathers who quoted the parents Mr and Mrs Inman Estep. The two suspects face a Friday hearing.
Solomon S. Sheftall and R. B. Alexander, Monroe men, were arrested near Texarkana Arkansas and brought to Ouachita parish for questioning by the grand jury investigating an attempted robbery at Henry C. Mickie’s residence. The two may be implicated in the case.
France pressed the Rhine issue at Geneva during the Locarno crisis and the Italo Ethiopian conflict warning that fortifications along the Rhine would violate the Versailles treaty. French ministers briefed Anthony Eden while Ethiopia and Spain sought clear negotiation terms under League of Nations auspices.
In Ruston Louisiana on April 9 the Lincoln parish grand jury indicted 17 year old Robert Smokey Hill dubbed Smokey Hill for the February killings of H. H. Laird a white man and May Harris a young black woman. The jury indicted Hill on murder and released Mrs Laird who had been detained for questioning.

A confidence game cheats two boys out of money for Easter flowers. Gainesville tornado waifs are hospitalized awaiting ID. U S Steel reports March shipments rise to the highest level since 1933. Louisiana Presbytery to meet in Lake Charles April 14.
Monroe city officials and chamber groups agreed to seek a one hour parking limit on downtown streets with strict enforcement. They also urged traffic lights on Louisville Avenue from the new bridge to Sixth Street and planned to present the resolutions to local civic clubs for approval.
Washington April 9 The Landon for president movement reported renewed support in Minnesota as seven district conventions chose delegates while Senator Borah and Colonel Frank Knox prepared for Illinois primary plans. Alf M Landon Kansas governor and Republican hopeful has stayed silent on his candidacy as supporters gather convention votes for him.
Elmer Threiber age 28, manager of North Hamilton field, and passenger Frederick Sherer 19 were killed when their two seat open cockpit plane crashed on a local farm near Hamilton. Threiber died en route to a hospital and Sherer died two hours later. investigators search for cause.
Gainesville Georgia April 3 Commerce, halted by a deadly tornado, begins anew as small merchants salvage stocks amid devastation. Red Cross reports 152 identified dead 33 missing and 225 seriously injured. 839 families homeless 3000 to 4000 people affected as repairs start and relief continues.
