The Ouachita parish grand jury reported after a four day session that issuing worthless checks is a growing problem among certain citizens. It returned seven indictments on bad check charges and urged cooperation to curb the practice. It also praised the jail’s cleanliness and supported prison labor to extend sentence impact and reduce costs.
The Hotel Monroe banquet hall hosted 200 attendees from Kiwanis clubs in Jackson Mississippi Shreveport Ruston and Bastrop. District Governor Watkins and local organizers joined Reverend Early A H Doty led singing with Mrs Floyd Allison providing solos and Kate Boyce offered violin performances. Continued on page six.
Joyce Hawley known as the bath tub girl is in seclusion in New York and intends to seek help from Attorney General Sargent and President Coolidge to win a pardon for theatrical producer Earl Carroll. She visited Federal Judge Goddard and said she will tell the truth to clear Carroll on perjury charges.
The Ouachita Valley Council sets the Annual Scout Rally for May 7 with C d D Wise A M Thornton L P Abernathy and H K Touchstone leading. Scouts will fill the day with swimming contests ball games and detailed afternoon activities including reviews inspections signals races first aid drills and tent pitching.
In Chattanooga Tennessee charges against Annie Tominson and Frank Baskett will be dropped after two Black boys aged 17 and 14 confessed to holding Virginia Jo Frazier two years old, daughter of City Commissioner Fred B Frazier. Police say a separate plan involved Lewis and Arthur Willis who took the child and received a ransom of 3333 dollars.
A demonstration by Bell Telephone engineers linked Washington and New York for a live television showing. Herbert Hoover spoke by telephone and appeared on a small screen in New York, with radio performers shown in Whippany New Jersey. Officials cautioned that practical daily use remains distant.
Borger Texas April 8 more Texas rangers moved in to back Governor Moody in a crime clean up plan after raids in Borger that led to 260 arrests mostly women. Officials sought to force the removal of undesirables and deter further violence as martial law loomed as a last resort.

Two Missouri Kansas and Texas passenger trains on parallel tracks near Parsons Kansas plunged into flood waters. Engineer E L Phillips and fireman Dave Ball of train 22 were killed and about 18 others injured. ten coaches sank with the engine. Train 21 from Kansas City also derailed eight miles away with no serious injuries.
In Chickasha Oklahoma on April 8 a Little Washita River flood near Rocky Ford trapped 14 to 16 people in a two room John Trammell farm house. Six bodies recovered and six more missing after a five inch rain. a local undertaker ordered six caskets. Telephone lines down hinder communication.
In Baton Rouge an unidentified 19 year old posing as a state university student robbed and brutalized F. M. Johnston of Budd Wheel company and fled. Johnston suffered head lacerations while the assailant escaped after striking him with a peddler's pitcher and breaking a crock and pitcher. The youth left the room after writing the name E J Burns mother Emma Burns 203 East Third St Homer, then vanished.
Normand and Norris Rawles were arrested and committed to parish jail on charges of assault with a knife and a stick. They allegedly waylaid R. C. Willford and his son E. Willford near the old Ed Bamberg place in Ward 9. Bond set at $500 by Judge R. W. McClendon after affidavits described the attack and threats to kill.
J. J. Poe a sixty year old teacher-student from Emory University Georgia sues for twenty five dollars to recover matriculation and course fees in the college extension department He says he could not hear instructors clearly during lectures and his failure to pass partly blocked a Kentucky teacher certificate.
In district court yesterday afternoon Edgar Williams nineteen pleaded guilty to grand larceny and received from twelve to eighteen months in the state penitentiary Judge Percey Sandel imposed the sentence. E L Musgrove pleaded guilty to forgery and was given from eighteen to twenty four months. Williams theft charge involved a Monroe auto taken September nineteenth and abandoned after a pursuit at Rochelle. Musgrove allegedly passed a fifteen dollar forged check on FE Jack Selig following grand jury indictment.
Levees at Burks Landing Mississippi and Columbus Kentucky face breaches as the Mississippi River reaches its highest level since 1922. About 24 watches by engineers and volunteers guard the swollen floodfronts while residents evacuate near Burks Landing and Columbus. Weather forecasts project river rises to 38.0 feet at Cottonwood Point by April 10 and 52.5 feet at Helena by April 14, with sandbags reinforcing weak spots and guards patrolling all levee stretches.
