Senator Russell Long and Mayor deLesseps Morrison will share the stage at the Louisiana Police Jury Association meeting in Baton Rouge. Long will represent Gov Earl K Long who is recovering from a heart attack at the April 17 general session. Morrison will discuss The Future of Local Government in Louisiana along with other opening day speakers.
Warren Cox, 60, of Cotton Valley, was found guilty of murder in the slaying of George Locke, a Cotton Valley trapper, in Shreveport Louisiana. Cox pleaded self-defense and faces life imprisonment, with sentencing expected to be delayed two or three weeks to file bills of exception.
In Turkey Texas on April 7 Sandra Haynes age 2 played with a rattlesnake, biting its tail until adults found her with the snake in hand and tail in her mouth. A doctor examined her and found no fang marks or injuries.
In Washington on April 7, Frank Pace Jr of Arkansas won Senate Armed Services Committee approval for President Truman's pick as secretary of the army. Pace, 37, current Budget Bureau head, pledged firm action against security risks and support for ending racial segregation in the armed forces. Pace spoke of his Arkansas roots and education at Princeton and Harvard. Senators Byrd and Bridges praised him as an able and splendid public official likely to be confirmed next week.
Three people died and eight were injured in an early morning blaze at the Devon Hotel near Russell Square London. A 34 year old woman leaped to her death from the top floor as others perished inside. The fire’s cause was under investigation and a man’s body was found inside.
Kansas City on April 7 reported police focusing on Charles Binaggio’s out-of-town links after Binaggio and his enforcer Gargotta were killed in his Truman Road political club. Over 25 associates have been questioned, many expressing sorrow but offering little usable detail. Investigators speculate on motive tied to Binaggio’s 50 plus trips to Denver, St. Louis, and other places, as officials race to prevent further violence in the underworld following the double murder.
Harold Mohr was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the mercy killing of his cancer weakened brother Walter, 55, in Allentown Pennsylvania. The prosecution said the 36 year old tannery worker shot Walter after the brother repeatedly begged to be helped to die. The defense contended temporary insanity from caring for the blinded invalid man.
Washington April 7 Truman's choice of John Foster Dulles as adviser to Secretary of State Acheson drew mixed reactions among Republicans. Some, including Vandenberg, supported bipartisan cooperation, while Watkins Malone Knowland warned the move could fail to unite the party. Several GOP members praised the appointment but stressed continued criticism where policy differed. Also reported are a Lehigh County voluntary manslaughter verdict, defense moves for a new trial, and related cases involving mercy killing, insanity defenses, and notable defendants.
President Truman faced a cautious Capitol Hill as he urged a new unemployment insurance program to cover about 6 million more workers and boost benefits.
