President Lyndon B. Stassen scores a landslide victory in Wisconsin as U.S. political coverage notes his bold campaign surge. The result shapes the 1948 Republican field with Stassen topping Wisconsin voters and signaling momentum in the national race.
Harold E Stassen appears set for a smashing Wisconsin victory in the Republican primary likely delivering up to 20 of the 27 national convention votes. MacArthur trails with seven delegates and late counts could shift a few places in the at large slate. Dewey shows strength in New York with nine delegates from that state.
Monroe dentist Dr Henry J Braddock 59 died about 1145 am Wednesday in a local hospital from a stroke and cerebral hemorrhage suffered Sunday in his garden. Born in Laurel Mississippi he moved to Monroe in 1945 and opened an office at 335 12 De Siard Street. Survived by wife Allyne daughter and sister. Funeral plans at Hixson Brothers with Masonic pallbearers.
The justice department announced that pardons were denied for 45 of 52 Louisiana milk strike participants convicted last year for stopping milk trains and trucks. Seven applications remain pending. most are expected to be parole eligible between April 15 and May 15.
April 7 Washington the nations air force leaders gained a hearing before the Senate armed services committee as calls for expanded air power grow. Secretary Symington and top aides testified in a closed session while Republicans urged the panel to decide on the air force size before drafting draft or universal military training plans.
Heavy freight trucks resumed movement on the Pennsylvania turnpike after a spontaneous sitdown protest, with police weighing trucks and removing those over 45,000 pounds. About 1,000 trucks were at the eastern turnpike terminus. independents led the action, and some jailed for fines. A delegation planned to press Harrisburg for weight relief.
Paul G. Hoffman, president of Studebaker, won Senate confirmation to direct the European recovery program. The 56-year-old auto maker endorsed by Chairman Vandenberg, the committee approved 13 to 0, and Hoffman said prosperity is a key antidote to communism. He accepted cabinet rank at $20,000 a year after a trip to Japan and a White House talk with President Truman.
In Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin an 85 year old landlady Mrs Richard P Cody was found dead and her body burned in a furnace. Tenant William Drews 50 confessed to killing her with a fist and hiding her body in the furnace after moving into her three story mansion. He later claimed he married Julia Smith and gave her 110 dollars taken from the victim and stated he is charged with first degree murder.
President Truman pardons George Caldwell who was convicted of mail fraud connected to the Louisiana scandals of 1940. Caldwell has been out of prison since September 1941. the pardon restores civil rights. He started serving in February 1940, was paroled in September 1941, and has been on probation since. Caldwell was LSU construction superintendent during the Huey Long era scandals.
F. L. backs civil service Lake Charles La April 7 The State Federation of Labor seeks help from the new administration to end the nearly year long Southern Bus Lines drivers strike by May 11 inauguration day. The federation also endorses extending the civil service system and forms Labor's League for Political Education to raise funds and support activities barred to unions by the Taft Hartley act.
One Alabama man and two AWOL soldiers were arrested by state police while allegedly trying to sell parts from a 1946 Chrysler coupe they traveled in. Ray Whittemore, 22, sought on a felony Warrant from Amarillo, obtained the car with hot checks. The AWOL soldiers were stationed at Lake Land Air Base in San Antonio and will be returned there by military police from Barksdale Field. Amarillo sheriff's deputies were en route to pick up Whittemore.
Berlin April 7 The Russians charged that British violations of allied rules caused a collision between a British airliner and a Soviet fighter. The British called the claim palpably untrue. Russians also boycotted two more Kommandantura committees and extended traffic restrictions to parcel post, notes on Berlin crisis.
Milwaukee April 7 A 35 year old Socialist will take office in two weeks as mayor Frank P Zeidler defeated non partisan opponent Henry Reuss 119 956 to 93 415 on unofficial returns from 443 of 460 precincts Zeidler an engineer and school board member continues the Socialist administration that led the city from 1916 to 1940 and marks a notable political comeback following Carl Zeidler’s anti natal career and Navy service
Secretary of the Treasury Snyder urged tax policy tied to long term national interests in Shreveport. He criticized Congress for income tax cuts, urged balanced budgeting, debt reduction, and warned against premptive revenue cuts before total outlays and foreign aid needs are assessed. He cited a treasury plan proposing 49 technical tax changes.
In Americas Ga April 7 death sentences on Rosa Lee Ingram a 40 year old negro woman and her two teenage sons for the slaying of a white sharecropper were commuted to life imprisonment by Judge William M Harper. The judge ruled circumstantial evidence supported a commutation under Georgia law. The youths Wallace 16 and Sammie Lee 14 drew national attention. Parole eligibility after seven years. appeal to Georgia supreme court undecided.
Helsinki sources predict swift ratification of the Soviet Finnish mutual aid treaty after its signing in Moscow. President Paasikivi backs a rapid conclusion as parliament, with 200 members divided among parties, is expected to approve by near end of next week. The pact preserves Finnish independence while allowing Russian troop presence if Finland is attacked.
Washington April 7. President Truman's Council of Economic Advisers urged immediate enactment of stand-by rationing and wage price controls citing inflation risks. Chairman Edwin G. Nourse said the report covers rearmament, tax cuts, defense spending and Europe recovery, while ruling out broad wartime controls for now. House Banking Committee Chairman Wolcott warned against revived domestic curbs.
The fourth annual convention of the Louisiana State Society of Medical Technologists will gather in Mon ree April 9 to 11 with Frances Hotel as headquarters. Registration starts Friday at 1 p.m. and committee meetings run 1 to 2 p.m. The executive board and chairmen will meet at the hotel before the conference.
