Army engineers report 20 000 acres flooded from Osage City to the Missouri River mouth north of St Louis with several thousand acres flooded downstream. Heavy farm land floods extend toward St Genevieve Cape Girardeau Missouri and Miller City Olive Branch Illinois. Evacuations occur in dispersed areas of New York and New England.
Armed police and armored vehicles storm Nyanga on a national holiday. Four Africans were shot when police met a hostile crowd after a patrol came under attack. Deputy Commissioner Reay said no further patrols would run on the holiday.
In Lancaster California a house fire endangered five children and two adults after a prowler was spotted in the yard. Investigators ruled out bombing or arson, noting the blaze appeared accidental with the house gutted and one neighbor lightly injured.

Judge David I. Garrett today sentenced Jewell Frost a 23 year old West Monroe woman to six months in Ouachita parish jail on each of three counts of theft. She pleaded guilty to theft of wearing apparel. In other action, three persons were fined $25 and costs: Henry E. Hopper Charlie Winston and Louis V. Edney. Alfred Davis was fined $25 and costs for having no driver's license.
Unofficial returns show a nearly six to one defeat for a $200000 Ward 1 fire district plan. Voters rejected the district and the $313381.50 property assessment, also defeating construction of two fire stations and a three mill maintenance tax. Ouachita Parish Police
