Prominent Lake Providence Marshal Dies in Street Shootout

Lake Providence Louisiana April 6 the city marshal William Cobb and citizen John McGuire clashed over barriers to block traffic on Levee and Second streets. McGuire was shot through the heart as he returned with a pistol. Cobb surrendered to the sheriff. Both men were leading members of the community. McGuire leaves a widow. Cobb has a wife and three children. Witnesses included Mrs Cobb and her three daughters on the levee.

Reorganization of Custom Offices Under Review

Washington April 6 A commission of special agents recommends reorganizing the custom offices at New Orleans Chicago and Baltimore to improve efficiency Secretary MacVeagh is considering the plan Collector Hebert of New Orleans protests the recommendations against his office and is urging reversals.

Floods threaten wide area as Mississippi crest nears

Reports from Baton Rouge to Memphis describe levee breaks along the Atchafalaya and near Hickman with breaches up to six hundred feet. Crews race to close gaps while towns endure rising water reaching Reel Foot Lake and threatening farming lands across Kentucky and Tennessee.

Refugees and cattle arriving as levees hold at Vicksburg

Refugees and large numbers of cattle arrive from overflowed sections around Vicksburg as more than two thousand men work on levees. Levees threaten to break at several points but hold. railroads run with dirt sacks on levees. Gauge at noon 48.5 feet, 50 feet expected by Monday. Weather cloudy with light rain.

Lowlands Threaten Natchez as River Rises

Natchez April 6. The river rose seven tenths in twenty four hours. Steamboats transfer two hundred head of cattle and horses from the lowlands to Natchez and Vicksburg. Cattle and household goods move to higher ground as showers are forecast and residents remain in anxiety.

Desperate flood outlook at Arkansas City raises alarms

Memphis reports April 6 that St Francis Levee Board chief Kil lough calls the flood situation desperate though hopeful. Major Smith says the situation is extremely serious but weather offers some relief. Reel Foot levee gap remains two hundred yards, water breaches crest of levees, water flows toward the Mississippi. Drinking water in flooded areas is very scarce.

Mississippi flood grave as main levee fails near Reel Foot

Memphis dispatch reports that with one main levee collapsed and several breaches along the Mississippi flood area, Major-General Mark S. Smith oversees emergency work. Breaches at Reel Foot Lake near Hickman Kentucky and other sites threaten Golden Lake and areas along the Arkansas side. Sandbags are used to raise revetments to one and a half feet while authorities seek relief as rivers breach further.

Waterways under stress as levees breach and rail links shift

At noon the gauge reads 41 feet as Arkansas City reports seepage through a levee four miles above. Workers and two government boats operate there while the below Arkansas City levee holds. Morrell enables Iron Mountain to bridge a washout and resume trains by tomorrow. A washout forces rerouted service on the Iron Mountain and Little Rock Monroe line. Chauvin swamp tracks are flooded.
