A cyclone plowed through Alexandria and Pineville Louisiana, killing at least thirteen and injuring about sixty with extensive property damage. Relief fund drives began as authorities assessed the wreckage and evacuated the injured to hospitals.
Alvin Owsley national American Legion commander arrived Jackson Mississippi a day late cancelling his Memphis engagement and postponing Nashville date to speak at a mass meeting. He joked he never married so he had no wife to promise him not to fly.
The New York Yanks and Brooklyn Dodgers arrived in Monroe from Vicksburg for an exhibition, with 1 newspaper man joining the party. Both clubs report sharp form for the afternoon game at Forsythe Park as rain improves the diamond and city streetcar service runs to the park.
Johnny Weissmuller of the Illinois Athletic Club extended his string of world records by posting a 150 yard backstroke in 1 42 28 5, surpassing his previous best at the IAC water carnival in Chicago. Clifford Durant planned a multi distance speed run at the Los Angeles Speedway. In St Joseph Michigan the Foster jury remained deadlocked after 25 hours of deliberation.
Arrangements completed for the fourth annual Ouachita Elementary Athletic and Intellectual Association meet at West Monroe. Baton Rouge officials assist local forces as 26 schools compete for cups and 19 medals in intellectual contests and 16 athletic medals. Entries exceed records with 400 children aged 6 to 16, preliminaries run Saturday morning at West Monroe Church.
The Louisiana Federation of Labor selected Monroe as the meeting place for its next convention. Thomas J. Greer of Shreveport was re-elected president without opposition along with unopposed or routine officer selections from New Orleans Alexandria Shreveport and Lake Charles.
The Lafayette Klan B C Crow 24 disbands after a meeting on April 4 1923 to resolve that members resign and return their charter. A sworn statement by J B Vannes Kliprafft notes motives and concerns over public perception of the Klan in the community.
H Marrus brother of S S Marrus Monroe store keeper died in Pineville Wednesday evening from injuries from the cyclone that struck central Louisiana yesterday. Widespread damage in Alexandria noted. Pineville asylum inmates stirred. Monroe linemen dispatched to repair wires as rain hail and wind battered the area. Local lines mostly intact with few telephone troubles reported.
In Louisiana, Judge Columbus Reid and Judge Robert Ellis seek to challenge Judge H F Brunot’s supreme court win. Depositions set for Opelousas as a trial is scheduled in St Landry parish with Judge William Carruth presiding.
At a Rotary luncheon, Ty Cobb summarized the Biloxi District conference highlights and Rotary aims for community life. A nominating slate for next year was presented by Harvey Trousdale president, Byron Vaughan vice president, Albert Horuff secretary, Emmanuel Sugar sergeant at arms. Curtain calls from Springtime and solos by William Wunsch highlighted the program at the Saenger Theatre tomorrow.
Marion Ohio April 5. President Harding plans to become a gentleman farmer after leaving the White House and devote time to writing. Friends say he bought a farm of 26512 acres in North Bloomfield township, Morrow county, near his birthplace, near Marion.
Babe Ruth arrives with the Yankees in Monroe and dismisses reports of lost batting power. He says he feels fit and ready to break records, expects the team to repeat last year’s pennant effort, and predicts a World Series win over the Giants if they face them. He plans to try for a home run that afternoon.
In Atlanta April 5 two Klan officials T dy McKinnon and N W Furney surrendered to warrants charging embezzlement of 27000 and 80000 dollars. Sheriff Lowry took charge of the Imperial Palace as William J Simmons and H W Evans prepared for a court hearing over control of the order.
