The mayors of Monroe and West Monroe urge all businesses to close 9:30 to 11 a m on Saturday April 6 for a patriotic parade. Citizens are asked to join the event and participate in the procession.
Monroe and West Monroe residents join a Saturday mass parade marking the third Liberty Loan drive and the first anniversary of U S entry into WWI. The event, organized by Ouachita Parish Council of Defense, plans a foot procession from the courthouse square with veterans in vehicles and a broad mix of organizations and citizens.

A dense price sheet lists wholesale and retail costs for meats, fats, cereals, and canned goods. Items include bacon various cuts, star hams, beef sides, lard, sugar, best meal, tomatoes, corn, rice, grits, baking powder, evaporated milk, and pasta, with per unit and per package pricing.
British forces were forced back to a line east of Villers-Bretonneux after heavy enemy assaults between the Luce and Somme rivers. German troops attacked in strength with repeated pushes, suffering losses as fighting continued into yesterday evening and night. North of the Somme, German artillery was active near Bucquoy and the Serape valley, while British guns shelled near Albert.
The Federal Trade Commission ordered ninety seven lumber companies in the west to desist from unfair competition. The order also targets Luke W. Boyce, a Minneapolis detective, for procuring information meant for bona fide customers and publishing supplier lists of Mississippi Valley Lumbermen at Minneapolis.
Associated Press reports a large fire in the wholesale district of Kansas City caused extensive damage. Investigators suspect arson with fires set at multiple sites. three city blocks were destroyed and losses are estimated around five million dollars.
Washington April 5. Nine billion dollars is the approximate cost to the United States of one year of war. More than half has gone to loans for allies and will be repaid. one third spent for the army. one tenth for the navy. one fifteenth for ship building.
Treasury receipts cover running expenses but repayable from June taxes and Liberty loan proceeds. Government experts say war costs exceed formal figures due to state and local spending increases. overall private and public costs rise with inflation and efforts to cut waste. In Houston, Privates Mann and Matthews, both Negro, of the 37th Infantry, were hanged at Camp Logan for killing Private Foley of the 150th Infantry while guarding the prisoners. In Petrograd, German ships landed in Finland and occupied Hango, sinking three Russian ships to block capture.
Washington April 5 The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered an investigation and physical valuation of forty five telegraph and cable companies and their financial condition a process akin to the railroad valuation already underway The Western Union is not included in the list in this order
G T Cross of the Chamber of Commerce set ward quotas for the third Liberty Loan drive totaling 525 400 for the parish with Monroe and West Monroe included. Ward quotas range from 60 700 in Ward Seven to 138 100 in Ward Two, with district notes and a 66 per 1 000 assessed value subscription implied. The drive starts tomorrow as banks begin taking subscriptions and reports are to be filed daily by chairmen. A note from Dallas Federal Reserve lowers the national quota but not Ouachita’s, keeping local target intact. Boy Scouts will distribute paste-board bells to promote the drive.
Collinsville Illinois residents report a mob lynched a man named Robert P at midnight on April 5 for alleged disloyal utterances. He knelt with arms crossed and prayed in German before the hanging.
Allied fronts report heavy German assaults south of the Somme near Amiens with ten thrusts repulsed or costly for the attackers. French and British lines hold with several local gains by French forces around Grivesnes and the Moreuil area. In America, mass conscription orders for the second draft are set to be issued to governors soon.
Advice from J. R. Buchanan of the U S Department of Labor says James L. Rodier will be in Monroe for the patriotic celebration Saturday. A Monroe delegation wired city officials to request his presence and Rodier is expected to speak during the parade.
After examinations on Thursday the local registration board accepted seven applicants, rejected three, and referred one to the medical advisory board. Accepted are Turner Gray James Loward Marshall Henry Kirt Touchstone Alex Tucker Henry Tullos Dro Arthur Johnson Homer Leroy Boatner. Rejected are Garfield Squires Frank R Thompson. Referred Isaiah Turner.
