Reports from Memphis to Helena say levees along the middle Mississippi hold with no major caving at Old Town. About 680 men fed, hundreds queued for work as engineers and crews reinforce sub levees and barricades to avert foundation undermining.
Attorney Joe Dawkins for the Louisiana Tax Commission and the Ouachita parish assessor says an appeal to the supreme court will be taken in the Monroe Grocery Company Ouachita Flour and Feed Company Munholland-Danwitz Furniture Co J Baer Company and Guy P Stubbs against the assessor. The Sixth District Court decision favored the Monroe firms and Mr Stubbs against tax officials.
Monroe Community Service play leaders association holds its regular meeting tonight in the City Hall council chamber. President asks members to bring new recruits and W C Bech of Benton Harbor will attend as the new executive director. Members without game lists can obtain copies by attending and participating.
C. C. Carr aged 63 died suddenly at 625 Catalpa street last night at 10 15. He served as a locomotive engineer for the V S and P railroad and lived in Monroe forty years. Services were held at 4 pm at the family home with Rev Frank Tripp. Interment followed at Riverview cemetery. Surviving are his widow and four daughters Gabbie Helen Flora and Mrs Nora Trimble. Floral tributes reflected high regard.
Pittsburgh April 4 The first disorders in the Western Pennsylvania coal district were reported from Fayette and Washington counties where authorities said high tension electric wires were cut. A state police detail was called to disperse crowds pressing non union workers from leaving. John L. Lewis told the House labor committee that 600,000 miners stopped work last Saturday and that bituminous workers are out indefinitely to secure a basic wage contract, while calling for a national wage scale and conference with operators. He noted government ownership is impossible at this time.
John W. Allen of the Game and Fish Commission urges residents to protect wild game driven from lowlands by rising Mississippi River waters. Wardens are stationed in Poinsett, Cross, Mississippi, Crittenden, St. Francis, Lee, Phillips, Desha, Arkansas, Ashley, Chicot, Woodruff, Monroe and Prairie counties to safeguard deer and other wildlife moved into upland areas. Farmers report northern Louisiana floods also pushing game into higher ground.
Congress failure to fund the Mississippi Warrior river barge line threatens early suspension of operations between New Orleans and Birmingham. Secretary Weeks warns that only 80 000 dollars was allotted of 330 000 requested, risking discontin uing or curtailing service and prompting reevaluation by Congress.
A meeting of the Louisiana Savings Bank and Trust Company stockholders was called after a directors meeting. The general meeting is set for Saturday May 6 at 11 a m at the bank. The agenda includes voting on liquidating the bank and electing three liquidators and ratifying the liquidators contracts to pay depositors and liabilities in full.
The Lyceum theatre in Monroe, owned by Saenger Amusement Co of New Orleans, preps to open Saturday at 6 pm with Cameron of the Royal Mounted. The remodeled interior is in French gray pink and ivory with a new foyer, two machines, a screen, and a transverticle cinemeto projector graph for clear pictures.
Over eighty depositors of the El Dorado Bank held a meeting to decide steps for protecting their interests. A committee was formed to investigate the bank’s affairs and report when the bank might reopen. Claude Posey chaired the committee with Samuel Cook and F. M. Ballard. W B Eason was secretary.
