Killer tornadoes swept through North Texas and southern Oklahoma killing at least 16 people and injuring up to 800. Dallas bore the heaviest losses with about 800 homes destroyed and 170 plus injured. Oklahoma reports five deaths and 14 injuries as rescue operations continue.
The weather bureau reported a tornado dipping four miles north of Marshall Texas at 11 45 am today destroying four houses and knocking down 12000 volt power lines with no immediate injuries. Earlier a tornado struck Avenger Texas about 50 miles northwest at 10 30 am CST and moved southeast toward Jefferson Texas.
Five people died as the Rockies endured the heaviest spring snowstorm in 22 years. Snowdrifts up to five feet filled mountain watersheds, easing drought pressures. Denver reported 16 inches, Colorado Springs 15, Cheyenne 10, with statewide closures and travel disruptions easing as systems began to normalize. Governor MacNichols praised the moisture gain, while Agriculture Commissioner Swisher warned of broader implications.
A Dallas tornado destroyed 197 homes in a 13 block area scattering debris and corroded metal. Gas leaks and live wires forced evacuations as Red Cross and Salvation Army shelters opened for hundreds left homeless. Ed Marsh described rescuing relatives amid the rubble. Police and sheriff deputies worked to prevent looting as families endured shattered homes and nightfall.
Realtors and builders in Monroe and West Monroe say the federal housing administration down payment cut will hurt rather than help. They warn easier terms will depress mortgage financing and housing activity, already at an eight year low, in the northeast Louisiana area. A. D. Nichols calls the move a definite impediment to sales and construction.
A blaze at Fort Miami Raceway in Toledo destroyed a horse barn at the start of a 44 day meeting. Twenty seven horses were killed or had to be destroyed after severe burns.
In Dallas AP reports Ralph Yarborough won the Texas race for the U S Senate over 18 rivals. Yarborough led late returns with 314 035 votes 37 06 percent Dies 257 627 30 40 Hutcheson 203 800 24 05 Bracewell Hart and White trailed as other candidates posted small totals.
D. E. Bagwell 67 known in Northeast Louisiana politics prepares to depart Thursday for an indefinite stay in Tucson Arizona. The Union Parish native longtime Ouachita Parish resident has suffered severe asthma and has spent much of the past months hospitalized in Monroe.
Among Monroe residents in Dallas yesterday were Mr and Mrs C B Braun. They were not harmed by the twister that hit the city, their friends will be glad to hear. Their trip to Dallas was for business.
Tornado warnings flashed across the mid south with Dallas struck by a mammoth twister Tuesday night. Monroe and northeast Louisiana were forecast only rain today and tonight as a west disturbance looms. Shreveport to Little Rock lay under tornado warning. Temperatures from 71 to 77 early today, with cooler air expected tonight.
President Eisenhower rejected speculation he will resign before finishing his second term and hand duties to Vice President Nixon. He called the rumors the worst he has heard since taking office and reiterated his doctors and self belief that he is able to serve. He also noted orders to limit his limousine speed and addressed questions about his Gettysburg trip.
Chile's government imposed emergency military law on its six million people after a night of violent anti inflation rioting in Santiago left scores dead or wounded. Demonstrations led by students followed a week of cost of living protests. Unofficial reports put deaths as high as 60 while President Ibanez warned of energetic use of arms to quell the violence.
M Keithen hails the ruling as a victory for the public after the Louisiana Supreme Court refused a rehearing on the nearly four million dollar annual telephone rate reduction ordered by the Public Service Commission. District official McKeithen notes about 1.3 million of the cut affects his area and outlines a refund plan approach.

In Greensburg Louisiana parish registrar LeRoy Newsom reports 418 Negro registered voters to 344 whites as of March end. The imbalance stems from a petition to legalize liquor sales in the parish second ward, while white ministers advocate keeping the area dry. Newsom notes many signers are not yet registered and some have asked to have their names struck, with potential adjustments reducing the Negro count.
