W. L. (Jack) Howard vows court action up to the Louisiana Supreme Court to place his name on the city mayoral ballot for the May 22 primary. He met with lawyers Tuesday and will outline plans after further discussion, arguing the attorney general’s ruling against him and 16 other candidates is an unfair political maneuver.
A spate of tornadoes swept Oklahoma Kansas and Missouri killing at least seven. Drumright bore the worst blows with five dead and about 100 houses damaged or destroyed. In Kansas two killed and Missouri reports two injured with $100000 in damage at Joplin. The toll includes multiple Bevel family members and others across a wide path from Drumright to Miami Oklahoma.
Senator Olin D. Johnston predicts a compromise farm bill now drafted will be acceptable to majorities in both the House and Senate. Conferees resume work after Easter recess, with final approval by both chambers likely. President Eisenhower urges prompt enactment and notes two farm measures including a gasoline tax exemption could save farmers about 60 million.
New Orleans opens hearings on alleged Communist activities as three witnesses remain unlocated. U S Marshals hunt for Robert Blanchard and his wife of Slidell Louisiana and Hunter O Dell a Black man. Subpoenas have been attempted for a week. Senator Arthur V Watkins leads a security panel to New Orleans with hearings slated to begin Thursday.
Milwaukee voters face presidential delegate choices amid Kefauver and Eisenhower popularity stakes. Kefauver challenges Eisenhower, urging farmer protests while Wisconsin's nonpartisan system allows cross party voting for delegates. Slates favor Kefauver and Eisenhower with limited opposition from John Chapple.
Denver convict Lee R. Leick, 32, who sought immediate execution for the Dec 1, 1953 murder of his wife Evelyn, authorized his attorney to withdraw the request after conferring with him. Defense lawyer Charles Ginsberg said Leick still desires death and acted to respect the attorney’s position. The hearing on a possible new trial resumes Friday before Judge Joseph M. McDonald.
The forecast calls for cloudy skies with thundershowers this afternoon and clearing tonight. At Selman Field the high reached 80 degrees at 11 30 a.m. and the low was 71. Tonight's lows range 53 to 62 with tomorrow's highs 70 to 74. Pollen count is 313.

Alfred P. Sloan Jr. aged 80 steps down as General Motors board chairman. Albert Bradley, 64, succeeds him on the GM board. Sloan remains on the board and as chair of the Bonus and Salary Committee. Harlow W. Curtice remains GM president and hails Sloan as a forward-looking force. Bradley, born in Blackburn England, joined GM as comptroller staff in AMITE La. The Tangipahoa Parish grand jury will meet April 10 to weigh charges against three men for armed robbery and the slaying of a 13 year old boy.
A massive dust storm swept across New Mexico Colorado and Oklahoma into west Texas with winds up to 80 mph obliterating visibility. Three traffic crashes in the storm killed Isham H. Hardin and Bill Hardin of Lubbock and Jack Caro of Spearman. Ten Pecos teenagers hospitalized after a two car crash and five injured in a seven car pileup near Wildorado. Numerous structures damaged and services disrupted across Midland Big Spring Childress Pecos Spern and Snyder as planes were grounded and buses delayed.
In Hyattsville police court Mr and Mrs Walter T Perry of Beltsville were convicted of willful child neglect and a handyman was found guilty of failing to provide proper care for three month old Thomas Perry. All three face 10 day jail terms. The infant’s toes were eaten during a March incident by the margay, while the child’s sister Pamela was unharmed. The hospital described the condition as serious with osteomyelitis developing in the leg.
Secretary Dulles stated the President would request congressional authority to deploy U S troops in the Middle East unless a sudden emergency prevented going to Congress. He also reiterated no substantial weapons sales to Israel are approved or rejected, aligning with a broader peace and security policy for the region.
Morris W Haas Sr 70 longtime Monroe business and community figure died after a short illness. Funeral Wednesday at 10 am Mulhearn Funeral Home with Rabbi Jacob Lantz and Rabbi F K Hirsch officiating. Interment in Jewish cemetery. He helped run Sig Haas and Sons, the region’s oldest continuous firm. He belonged to B Nai Temple Lotus Club and Bayou Desiard Country Club.
The Navy and Fairchild disclose secrecy around the Petrel guided missile noting its high reliability and complex electronic brain that guides the weapon to ships at sea. Described as an air to surface missile, the Petrel is also referenced as an air to underwater design in Fairchild’s report. Patrol craft are already equipped with the Petrel.
Algiers reports 68 more killed in scattered actions across North Africa in the 24 hours ending today following Easter weekend fighting that left 96 nationalist rebels dead. The toll includes rebels, French soldiers, and Tunisian units involved near Bizerte, Gafsa, Constantine, and western areas.
