A weekend storm swept across Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina, killing at least 49 people and injuring hundreds. Greensboro and Cordele bore the heaviest losses with dozens of homes, businesses, and churches damaged or demolished.
Col Mark Kimberling, warden of the New Jersey state prison, said the execution of Bruno Richard Hauptmann will likely proceed. Governor Hoffman's aide hinted at a possible reprieve. Hauptmann read the Bible and faced the chair with calm, while preparations included shaving his head and transferring to the death cell. Prosecution plans include convening a grand jury to consider charges against Paul H. Wendel and seeking legal guidance from the attorney general.

In New Orleans on April 3 two men cited as former convicts were jailed on vagrancy charges. James McCracken 43 of Hammond Louisiana alias Byron Hughes is charged as a fugitive from Huntsville Texas for involvement in a 1932 jail break with outlaws Raymond Hamilton and Clyde Barrow. The other man named John Cassidy reportedly served two terms for robbery at Angola.
The sixth annual cooking school and home makers institute sponsored by the Morning World and the News-Star closed with 2000 attendees at Neville High auditorium. The program featured Jack Angell's Three-Mile Inn artists, Bruce Jordan and Miss Vera LaSalle performing in a show praised by the crowd. Grand prizes were awarded including a Tappan range to Mrs. F. Roach and a Stewart-Warner refrigerator to Mrs. Joe Ladart, with multiple other winners named.
J W Talbert is appointed acting director of the sixth WPA district succeeding Powers Higginbotham who resigned. Talbert, previously in Baton Rouge overseeing statistical and financial work, succeeds Higginbotham announced by James H Crutcher state works progress administrator. Higginbotham was appointed by Frank Peterman as sixth district commissioner.
Bruno Richard Hauptmann 36 from The Bronx and Paul H. Wendel from Trenton stand accused. Hauptmann, convicted February 13 1935, awaits execution while Wendel awaits indictment as a grand jury weighs charges. Hauptmann is German born, a carpenter with a wife and son. Wendel, of German descent, a salesman, is married with two children. Hauptmann was arrested September 19 1934 and arraigned rumors say a death sentence looms tonight.
