Captain Carter E. Smith faces a jury as testimony wraps up after he admits firing a weapon following his daughter Billy’s claim that Lymen Rester had “misused” her. The 19-year-old victim died in the ensuing confrontation.
The night of February 18 a youth advanced and fired after warnings from Smith who confronted Rester about his intentions toward Billy. Louise Smith 17 testified Rester declared it would be him or Billy. Judge Holcomb ruled grand jury testimony inadmissible. A night session heard character witnesses describing Captain Smith as well known and respected.
Delegates from 22 countries gather in London to draft a five year plan to stabilize the global sugar market and ensure paying prices for producers. Ramsay MacDonald presides with Dr Hendryk Colisin. nations include the United States United Kingdom Canada Australia and others. Japan’s absence may complicate talks as Java may resist binding commitments.
In Shawnee Oklahoma on April 2 Sheriff Elza Evans held his office after an appointed successor Rufus Lyon sought mandamus to end the dispute. A large crowd attended Neville High School’s annual carnival. Ade laide Parker won the queen ballot over Peggy Morrison and Carolyn Husted, with John Myers chosen as king. The coronation featured pomp and attractions including wheels of fortune and a chamber of horrors, with Mrs. Minnie Ruffin directing a lively skit.
A mob smashed market stands on the outskirts of Warsaw at Sokulaw and Lukow injuring many Jews and driving them from the marketplaces in a riot reported April 2. The violence disrupted trade as authorities investigated the clashes and residents sought safety.
Paul Gux of Everett described four tense hours beside the crushed body of Everett Quick after a massive stump toppled from a creek bank and killed Quick. Gux survived the incident and recounted the ordeal.
Miss Louise Lott wed W A Rosier in a March 28 ceremony conducted by Rev. Boykin. The couple plans to reside in Clayton with Louise the daughter of Mr and Mrs Grover Lott. Boric acid mentioned later refers to orchard pest control.
