In Jackson Tennessee on April 2 an Illinois Central locomotive and caboose fell into a washout near Medon Station. Supervisor Joseph Dubeyser was killed while Engineer Robert Dorris is missing and feared drowned. Other crew members escaped.
A severe rainstorm sent the Cumberland river above the danger line in Nashville on April 2 with a stage of 41.8 feet. The Weather Bureau predicted 45 feet, and lowlands flooded forcing several families to flee their homes.
A Tallulah Louisiana dispatch to the Shreveport Times reports the Fifth Louisiana Levee District faces extreme Mississippi River flood danger for ten days. Levee President McClellan plans a determined fight to protect a 250 mile line across East Carroll Madison Tensas and Concordia parishes and seeks federal aid as a 52 foot stage at Vicksburg looms.
A Weather Service telegram to Secretary Anderson of the Progressive League states the Ouachita River will rise to 42 feet with Monroe expected to see the stage by April 6. The gauge read 39.7 feet at noon today.
Reports from Arkansas City warn of possible break ins as crest forecasts rise to 55 feet. Today a 51.1 foot stage is recorded while 8 inches of rainfall in the past 24 hours contribute to widespread flooding from the Ouachita to the Mississippi.
Water rush through a four hundred foot gap at Morrell Station twenty miles south of McGehee Ark bursts the track. Freight trains detoured via Ferriday and the M H L road. Passengers ferried by boat across the washed out section. Heaviest rains blamed, not a break in rails. Service may be halted for several days.
Passengers crossing the Mississippi at Delta Point say the Vicksburg Shreveport and Pacific terminal and incline are in danger and that a higher river level may force the company to discontinue its transfer service and stop through freight traffic.
The V, 8. and P. pump near the railroad bridge broke loose on Friday. Master Mechanic Ferguson and Superintendent Cox led a crew to free the house and pumps from the water. A wrecker was tried but bridge obstructions limited its use. A boat from the shingle mill was secured to lift the pump from the track.
Fire department responded to a stove fire at 2 30 this morning at the home of S J Rivoire on Jackson and Grammont streets. A hole burned through the floor large enough for the stove to fall through. Damage is about 25 dollars and is covered by insurance.
Willie Swigert, a young white man, was arrested yesterday at Bristle Ridge by Deputy Sheriff Arthur Grant. Swigert faces charges of stealing hogs from a negro.
The state contains over ten million acres of low and wet lands subject to reclamation.
New Orleans hosts the second National Drainage Congress April 10 to 12. Delegates from Mississippi Valley states will see reclaimed lands and learn how drainage and irrigation can convert 75 million idle acres into productive farmland, with engineers and public figures urging federal state cooperation.
