Nine Negro students completed a third full day at Central High School in Little Rock under federal guard. Attendance by about 550 white students was down, with no taunts heard as troops escorted the nine, while the principal deferred penalties for absentees and promised possible make up plans.
Sen Rainach's 10 member joint committee on segregation convenes in Baton Rouge at noon to review findings from March public hearings on communist influence behind racial unrest and to discuss possible 1958 legislation protecting state officials from federal civil rights actions. The closed session will cover Little Rock occupation by federal troops and potential voter registration actions under the new civil rights law.
Ruston Parnell-Burt Post 3615 VFW members refuse the pledge at their meeting. Commander Lescar W. Harlan says a unanimous resolution objects to federal troops in Little Rock and urges Eisenhower to address U.N. action against Russia while using troops. He cites bitterness among veterans over the 101st Airborne’s role.
Governor Orval Faubus in Hot Springs said he has no plans to call a special session of the Arkansas Legislature over the integration crisis. He noted a possible emergency session but stated no current plans.
Senator Herman Talmadge spoke in Dawson at a plant dedication praising Eisenhower yet urging impeachment, calling federal troops a political move and endorsing private schooling to resolve Southern issues. He contrasted the Little Rock crisis with leadership and questioned federal authority.

Sidney A. Wolff a 23 year old from Miami Florida was taken to the county penal farm after failing to pay a 51.50 fine. police found a loaded 38 caliber revolver on him and a loaded sports rifle in his car near Central High School. He wore an Air Force uniform and said he would report for active duty October 3 at Lackland Air Force Base. An Air Force spokesman said active duty orders would be held up while the Central High School incident was investigated.
A four stage Air Force research rocket group, called Project Far Side, is prepared for launch from a giant plastic balloon at 100000 feet above Eniwetok. The five Recruit and five Arrow IL rockets, built by Thiokol, aim to reach 17000 mph and 1000 to 4000 mile altitude, bypassing dense atmosphere.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover charged Gov Orval Faubus with disseminating falsehoods over claims that the FBI held teenage girls incommunicado for hours in Little Rock. Hoover denied any such detentions and urged Faubus to verify facts.
About 400 Welch High School students protested by leaving classes and marching through Welch's business district carrying signs supporting Little Rock. Mayor B F Howard and Principal E W Richardson failed to persuade them to return. eight Black students left early. Classes later resumed at Bluefield High School where 10 Black students attended.
John Fox of Monroe Louisiana, GOP leader and district chairman, denounces President Eisenhower for sending federal troops to Little Rock Arkansas. He warns in a telegram that such actions threaten the South’s two party system and states’ autonomy amid integration turmoil.
Partly overcast skies and warmer temperatures are expected in the Twin Cities area today and tomorrow according to the federal weather service. A similar forecast was issued last night for Arkansas. The high yesterday reached 73 degrees and the low 62.
Nikolai Khokhlov, a Soviet secret police official who defected in 1954, is critically ill from arsenic poisoning in a Frankfurt hospital. U S authorities planned to move him to an American hospital for safety as investigations linked a possible Russian agent to the attack.
Jes Ramblin Perry White president of the club for persons who have lost the larynx spoke at the Monroe Civitan weekly meeting in Hotel Frances. Six years ago he worked as a traveling drug salesman in a broad North Louisiana area when the illness led to the need for a delicate operation. He spoke about his experience and recovery under medical guidance.
Monroe planners expressed optimism after a two hour briefing with Shreveport officials led by Mayor James C. Gardner and City Planner Joel Taylor. Gardner said a Monroe planning program would guide growth, save thousands of dollars, and attract industry, with six of nine commissioners supporting a Shreveport like plan. He suggested using the same consultant as West Monroe, though the hire would await proper consideration.
A U S district judge blocked the Teamsters officer election in Miami Beach pending further action. The injunction targets 12 defendants and bars recognizing illegally chosen delegates or credentials, as Beck and Hoffa face Senate scrutiny and a pending appeal.
Hollywood reports the judge and jury in the confidential criminal libel case showed strain on the tenth day of deliberations without a verdict. The judge ordered a resumption Saturday at 10 a.m. and declined to poll the jury until it appears deadlocked in verdict ballots.
