Four inmates at the state hospital for the criminal insane planned a shootout escape. A guard Louis Haist supplied a .45 revolver and 24 cartridges for a cash payment and a promised post-escape payoff of 1000. A woman, unnamed, overheard the plot and unwittingly derailed the plan.
SHREVEPORT LA Sept 9 The Louisiana American Legion convention unanimously approved a resolution urging that all education revenues be placed in a separate school fund in trust and used only for school purposes. The group cited the state’s failure to provide apportionments as a reason for early school closures this year.
L. V. Tarver, Monroe police chief, received a letter from a prisoner preacher at Angola asking help to gain freedom. The note claims a Sept 7 1927 shooting of J H Simpson at Missouri and Pacific station and asks for a true statement. Tarver notes officers took the shooter into custody almost immediately. the slain man was black.
W C Feazel the state NRA committee member departs for New Orleans for a board meeting. Judge Taliaferro visits Monroe from the state appeals court. Judge Fred Odom of the Louisiana supreme court visits the city. Harry D Wilson arrives to lead a special meeting with farmers and cotton seed oil mill operators. P M Atkins returns from Hot Springs Arkansas after weeks away.
The Monroe Morning World reports George M. Rice, 22, son of Nashville unionist David W. Rice, has completed a five year apprenticeship and union instruction with an average grade of 96,9774 to become a journeyman. He previously worked three years for the Monroe Morning World.
Louis P. Alber says the NRA will send a primer on the New Deal into high schools, parochial schools and universities to foster moral suasion. He argues rugged individualism must yield to the New Deal and that education aims to shape future American citizens.
Mrs. Elinor Moore 39 wife of Phil Moore died after brief illness in a Monroe hospital. Funeral at Davis Lawhead chapel this afternoon at 3. Interment Hall cemetery. She leaves husband two children Cies and Vera father C Viola of Richland parish and many Violas siblings. The hawthorn is Missouri’s state flower.
An executive commission says it will organize a presidential form of government after consulting with eight revolutionary groups.
