In Short Creek Arizona authorities pursue Silvia Allred I C Spencer and Brice Johnson on charges of open and notorious cohabitation. Blinking lights around town and on the Utah Arizona boundary prompt Sheriff Ernest Graham to suspect a plot to shield the fugitives.
In Cleveland Tennessee a 47 foot well accident claims three lives. William Parker 54 his son D C Parker 14 and neighbor Jake Cranfield 51 died from black damp gas after Parker attempted to burn out gas with pine knots. Mrs Parker alerted rescuers as the two men perished at the bottom.
Harlan citizens vote under guard amid statewide runoff primary clashes between Democratic factions. National Guard is deployed, with 700 soldiers occupying Harlan as Gov. Laffoon condemns the area’s “reign of” disorder.
In West Monroe at the Bridge Hotel a quarrel over an August 30 auto accident led J W Horton to fire, wounding Bernard Marshall a bystander and Gene Davids. Horton is jailed while Davids and Marshall fight for survival.
Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace said he was well pleased with information gathered in a nation wide survey for a planned U S agricultural program. He concluded a southern farm conference in Athens Ga after regional meetings in Ames Iowa Logan Utah and upcoming in Storrs Conn
Washington reports a second German government protest linked to the July riot in Bremen where a Nazi flag was torn from a mast. It cites remarks attributed to a New York City magistrate who freed five men involved in the melee. The State Department pledged an investigation.
The floating prison La Martiniere with 673 convicts in eight steel cages sailed from Saint-Martin-de-Re for Guiana prisons. It will deliver inmates to Saint-Laurent du Maroni stations. Devil's Island receives none. Each convict must serve hard labor plus exile years before returning home.
Italian consuls in Ethiopia are recalled to Addis Ababa on initiative of the Addis Ababa envoy cited as precaution amid unsettled conditions. The Geneva League sub committee urged Italy and Ethiopia to delay force while seeking a peaceful settlement. Pope Pius XII voiced hope for a peaceful outcome despite growing tension.
James C. Prosser and Gilbert Stoll of Cleveland escaped serious injury after a field landing near White Castle Louisiana ended their planned flight to Bahia Blanca Argentina. They planned a staged trip to set a new world non stop record by returning to Cleveland covering about 6290 miles. The damaged craft included a bent propeller a damaged rear rudder ripped top and torn components.
The 1790 Ouachita post petition to commandant Jean Filhiol led to plans for Fort Miro. Translation by Mrs. Alf Reid and filing by John R. Humble place Fort Miro at the present Monroe Steam Laundry site on South Grand Street, Monroe, Louisiana.
Gulfport case worker Louis Boudreaux alias George Burke, 25, confessed to the attack on 11-year-old Lillian Stiglers after questioning in Gulfport and transfer to Hinds county jail Jackson. Police chief B F Crathirds confirmed the confession and formal charging followed.
In Cieszyn region near Praha Czech police report Polish nationalist raids leaving windows and schools damaged. Twelve ringleaders arrested. 800 foot soldiers from the Eighth regiment deployed to the city and housed in vacant factories after a Czech delegation sought protection.
Jack Myers of 205 North Fifth street was driven to St Francis sanitarium with a head cut after an alleged attack with an iron pipe. Police say Henry Mule Anglin of West Monroe is wanted for the injury though Myers claimed it was a friendly fight behind 109 Hall street.
Huey P. Long pushes a bill in Louisiana special session to jail federal workers in the state. He plans to file suit in the U S Supreme Court to block federal bureaus if unconstitutional. T O Harris, former state auditor, is arrested after being slapped by Long associate near the clerk’s desk.
H G Allen of Dubach indicted by Claiborne parish grand jury on assault with intent to commit criminal assault in the death of a woman hitchhiker found on the Homer Minden highway last April. Allen released on 2000 bond. arraignment set for Wednesday. Bobby Natten charged with murder and assault in same case. held on 9000 bond awaiting October term trial. Grand jury issued 15 true bills and 10 no bills. one case passed and one moved to juvenile court.
Powers Higginbotham, once Baton Rouge commissioner of streets and parks, sues the city for 7957.76 claiming salary due after his discharge following Huey Long era legislation. He notes his later role as sixth district engineering supervisor for the Works Progress Administration.
