German forces estimated at 50 000 to 60 000 moved into the Siegfried fortifications facing France. Tank detachments rolled toward new garages in the Saar basin while border towns report heightened registration of vehicles. Freshmen Instruction Begins Fall Orientation at Northeast Center

Orientation events at the Northeast Center kicked off with a Friday reception for faculty and spouses hosted by Dean and Mrs. C. C. Calvert. Two business sessions set duties for members and opening term plans. Freshmen must attend the 9 a.m. orientation tomorrow as the schedule spans through Monday and Tuesday with enrollment later in the week.

Auto racer dies dodging child at Flemington race

Chet Gardner a 40 year old racer from Long Beach California died during time trials at the Flemington fair automobile races. He swerved to avoid a child crossing the track causing a spin and fatal crash before 7000 spectators.

Floods Nonstop Ravage Two Colorado Resort Towns

Floods on a 20 mile front along the eastern Rocky Mountain slope killed at least five people and left three missing. Morrison near Denver saw four drowned as Bear and Mount Vernon canyons sent flood torrents sweeping houses and a highway. Eldorado Springs, a 200 population resort, lost 15 to 20 houses and a dance hall. Damage nears half a million dollars.

Large Monroe and West Monroe Kiwanis groups travel to Greenville Mississippi for the Kiwanis International district convention. Special train from flood area arrives in Monterrey

A special train carrying tourists and five automobiles arrived from Valles which was cut off by floods after a tropical storm. Juan Farias said another train with a similar load was expected Monday night. Eight flood victims' bodies were recovered. more may be found as flooded areas are searched.
