Fourteen large utilities announce a two year, billion dollar annual program to boost power facilities, joined by government in a national defense effort. Railroads step up steel purchases as weather cools retail demand, with some lines unable to defer much needed equipment.
Washington report estimates voters will distribute about 11.5 million dollars in top state and federal posts next Tuesday. Governors positions total salaries reach 676 thousand dollars, while 107 candidates vie for 35 Senate seats with potential salaries of 10 thousand dollars annually. House races include 432 seats with 972 contenders.
Frank Denman, 44, was sentenced by Federal Judge Ben C. Dawkins to three years in Atlanta federal prison for being an accessory before and after the Minder Bank and Trust Company robbery on June 68. He aided Harry and Truman Mahoney, Herbert Skaggs, and Dando Davis who have already been jailed for the crime. Denman’s wife received an 18 month sentence for harboring the bandits.
Grace Goldstein and three former Hot Springs police officials were found guilty in Little Rock on conspiring to harbor gangster Alvin Karpis before his May 1936 capture in New Orleans. Sentenced to two years each. other co defendants were freed on verdicts.
Dr J A O Hara president of the Louisiana board of health said the milk dispute with Mississippi arose from a misinterpretation of a Louisiana milk commission decision. He expected a settlement when the commission meets in Baton Rouge next Wednesday. Louisiana issued certificates for milk shipments from Mississippi creameries at Tylertown and Wesson as talks proceed.
Hitler’s deputy for colonial affairs said Germany lays claim to all prewar colonies but may seek compensation for those not claimed. General Franz Ritter von Epp, Bavarian governor, said Germany would not use force to settle colonial issues and would not beg for colonies. He urged colonial mandatories to state their stance on restoration before Berlin decides its attitude.
A crowd gathered in the Hotel Frances lobby as A B Clarkson campaign director for Twin City Community Chest handed out mock bank notes. He distributed sums of ten thousand to a hundred thousand dollars while the attendees watched in a tense, festive mood.
The contract for the new Newellton High School building goes to Humble and Humble of Monroe for 80000 dollars. Plans were prepared for an auditorium and plumbing by W. J. Riley of Monroe. Funded by the PWA and the parish school board at Newellton. Groundbreaking set for Monday.
One man died and another was hospitalized after a Model T rollover on the Rayville Winnsboro road near Dehlco in Richland Parish. Frank Cordrey, 24, of Fountain Hill Arkansas, was killed. his brother Richard Cordrey, 20, was minorly bruised and expected to be released soon. Two other men, Monroe Underwood and James Ivy, survived uninjured. The Richland Parish coroner said Cordrey died of a fractured skull and likely a broken neck.
Elmer F. Andrews, wage and hours administrator, dispatched twenty inspectors to enforce the new labor standards act. They will operate from temporary HQs in Boston, Washington, Chicago and San Francisco, with plans for twelve regional offices later. Ernest R. Strempel will head the Northeastern area from Boston and O J Libert will supervise the Midwest from Chicago.
With the first week ending, Twin City Community Chest shows $11,061.25 raised toward a $20,000 goal. Major contributors include Ouachita National Bank ($150) and United Gas Pipeline Co ($250) along with Shotwell and Brown and Simonton Grain Co. Less than $25 gifts totaling $1,480 will be listed later. Two new drives in Monroe and West Monroe will add teachers and pupils, while a women’s house to house campaign prepares to start.
Roosevelt fact finding board urges railroads to drop December wage cut for about 1,000,000 workers. Administration plans to discuss solutions with George M. Harrison and John J. Pelley at the White House as rail unions threaten a nationwide strike. The panel notes wage levels are not high and a broad cut would not solve the carriers’ financial woes.
The southern division of the American Pulp and Paper Mill Superintendents Association holds its fall meeting at Hotel Virginia on November 4 and 5. Activities include registration, a Brown Paper mill visit, a stag luncheon, and multiple technical talks by industry experts from the U S Department of Agriculture Swenson Evaporator and J O Ross Engineering Corp.
Representative Rankin of Mississippi denounced a proposed expansion of private power facilities in cooperation with the federal government. He called the plan a shrewd scheme by the power utilities and warned it could threaten national defense in a future war of kilowatts.
Monroe Chamber of Commerce bulletin shows September business up sharply from August except for auto registrations in Ouachita parish which fell 45.9 percent due to old models clearing out. Building permits rose 99.3 percent to 00,750 with West Monroe up 11 percent. Telephones in service rose to 6,742. Freight shipments increased with September inbound 2,059 cars and outbound 1,115.
Sugar technologists from Fiji, Java, Egypt and India arrive in Baton Rouge for a week of scientific sessions at the sixth world sugar congress. Delegates, about 200 strong, convened in New Orleans last Monday and head to LSU president James Monroe Smith’s home for a welcome reception. Discussions will cover cane cutting devices and the world sugar market price differentials between New York and New Orleans.
Louisiana Democratic Party committee delayed certifying Rep Newt V Mille as nominee after contest of the election, citing a pending Supreme Court ruling. Todd seeks a recount and ballot printing depends on the court action with absentee ballots to be mailed and timing uncertain. Field's committee split 10 to 6, audience packed, case moves toward November 2 general election stakes.
BP Fred Earhart member of the New Orleans commission visited the Louisiana state fair today as representative of Mayor Maestri. He advocated erecting a New Orleans building at the fairgrounds to house exhibits, noting the fair benefits all communities and should attract more attention from New Orleans.
