Soviet and American tanks faced each other at 200 yards along the Berlin sector border after a series of armed thrusts and patrols. U S Patton tanks escorted a civilian official while Soviet T34 and T54 tanks moved to Checkpoint Charlie and warned of Western advances.

The State Department called Moscow exchanges over Berlin border incidents unsatisfactory while U S Ambassador Thompson and Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko issued counter protests. Thompson protested East German interference with U S civilian movement into East Berlin. Gromyko countered that U S troops in West Berlin fueled danger by jetting jeeps through the wall to East Berlin. The two protests largely canceled each other.
The Coast Guard reported messages from the 324 foot Bahia de Nipe saying it would head to Florida with captain and three officers seeking asylum in Miami. Last August 17 the freighter was hijacked and the crew granted asylum. 23 others remain aboard.
