Advertisements For Base Runways Slated For Jan
Seven million dollars in bids on the first runway projects for the proposed naval jet training base at New Iberia Louisiana will be advertised in January. Capt. George M. Gans of the Pensacola Naval Air Station said the base could open by spring 1959 if all goes to plan. The Navy has begun condemnation proceedings for landowners resisting release, with about 4352 acres required. The base is expected to attract 3500 people and eight and a half million dollars in annual spending, including 2000 permanent personnel, and will train around 800 naval air students each year.
