Congress Delays Adjournment Over Campaign Financing Plan

Washington (UPI) The 89th Congress pushed ant inflation, college aid, and food for peace bills but stalled final adjournment awaiting a Senate vote on a House plan for voluntary taxpayer financing of presidential campaigns. Senate objections and a threatened quorum kept leaders from ending the session, with an unusual 7 am CST session slated for Saturday to break the stalemate.

Earthquake Hits Argentine Town Bel en Damaging Belen

A major earthquake struck northwest Argentina Friday damaging the town of Belen, 800 miles northwest of Buenos Aires. Belen, population 12,000, reportedly lost several buildings and had no telephone service as meager reports emerged of possible casualties amid the temblor that followed other South American quakes this week.

James Ray Goodson of Monroe ranks in the top seven percent of students at the Bell aircraft based telephone communications school at Keesler AFB near Biloxi Mississippi. A letter of commendation was sent to his parents and his wife Diana Dumas, both Ouachita Parish High School 1965 graduates. His wife also attended Northeast Louisiana State College and Louisiana Tech. In Monroe Mrs H M Bess James won a four hundred dollar purchase award for an acrylic abstract titled Planes at the Thomas Hunter Gallery of Art in Chattanooga Tennessee after submitting two paintings from hundreds of entries.

U S strike pilots report destroying or damaging about 125 of some 300 barges sighted along North Vietnam coast. Navy fighter bombers from the carriers Constel lation Oriskany and Franklin D Roosevelt attacked. Separate air strikes near Dong Hoi destroyed 15 barges and damaged 10 more. Ground fighting remained light with one engagement in Quang Nam Province where Viet Cong casualties were reported.

Warming Trend Develops in Monroe Area

A warming trend moves into the Monroe area with highs around 76 to 80 and lows near 48 to 56. Expect warmer nights and cooler days, with Sunday cooler and southeasterly winds shifting to northerly. Nenni Rejects Popular Front With Communists in Rome

In Rome Pietro Nenni deputy premier and Socialist leader ruled out a broad front with the Communists for the time being. He also publicly supported moves to legalize divorce. Nenni spoke during a press briefing with foreign journalists as his party plans to merge with the Democratic Socialist party by October 30.

Heart Valve Transplant Helps Ohio Girl Survive

Ten year old Joanie Pobst of Ashville Ohio recovers at Ohio State University Medical Center after a heart surgery replacing her defective aortic valve with a valve from a deceased 14 year old boy. OSU surgeon Dr Howard Sirak performed the homograft procedure on September 27. 27 pints of local blood aided the operation and she spent 13 days in intensive care. Her heart functions well on telemetry and doctors expect discharge soon.

LBJ Faces Tumultuous Welcome in Sydney Australia

President Johnson drew a mixed reception in Sydney with hundreds of demonstrators shouting boos while balloons streamers and ticker tape greeted him. Police controlled crowds as some protesters hoisted anti Viet Nam signs and blocked roads during a gallery reception before he spoke on a global society.
