Cairo reports say Egypt will abandon the monarchy and become a republic with plans for the transition under consideration. Officials declined to give a timeline while rumors spread of a major broadcast announcement from the state broadcaster and ongoing official readiness.
Construction of a 132000 armory for a Louisiana National Guard unit begins in City Park New Iberia with Col Frank G Spiess outlining plans. The Iberia Parish Policy Jury funds engineering with four armories planned using state and federal funds.
Friday session in the Missouri Pacific cross case heard LSU engineering director H A Flanakin discuss railroad crossing safety and stopping distances. Crye and wife of Mer Rouge. Funeral Saturday at 2:00 PM Horse Shoe Baptist Church with Reverend Townsend officiating. Burial in Carter's Cemetery under Hall Funeral Home direction.
The infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Bonnette died at a local hospital Friday morning. She is survived by her parents one sister Janice Bonnette paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs W V Bonnette West Monroe and maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs J H Kilpatrick West Monroe Graveside services are set for 10 00 oclock Saturday morning at Walnut Grove Cemetery under direction of Hall Funeral Home.
Sam O Scruggs 82 died today in an Alexandria hospital. Funeral at Trinity Baptist at 3 p.m. officiated by Rev Filer J Seals. Interment Mt Vernon Cemetery. Pallbearers named B S Taylor Clyde McPink H G Hudson Archie Davis George Varino Homer DeLaney. Survived by five daughters and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Ben F. Brooks of Minden, 64, died Thursday at 1 30 am in a Minden Hospital. Funeral was held at Memor ial Park Cemetery in Monroe with Rev. Truman Aldredge officiating. He was a member of Minden Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge. Survived by wife Pearl son Bernard H. Brooks granddaughter and grandson. pallbearers were nephews Allen Bob Paul Durwood James Samuel Hixon. Former Swartz resident moved to Minden to enter the grocery business.
In Copenhagen Jimmy King of Buffalo New York defeated Denmark's Christian Christensen in a ten round bout to extend his 16 fight winning streak on his European tour. King weighed 149 1 2 pounds to Christensen's 152 pounds. The report notes the chrome tanning industry was perfected in 1888 with a three day process compared with 90 days for vegetable tanning.
J H Stringer president of the Louisiana PTA says rumors that Civil Service Constitutional Amendment No 1 would kill the teacher tenure law are unfounded. Joseph Lallande of the Louisiana Civil Service League confirms the amendment lists teaching as exempt, while the PTA board endorses the amendment as not conflicting with tenure or retirement laws. The PTA has long supported Civil Service in Louisiana and urged its restoration since 1940.
A four room frame house at 212 White St in Booker T. Washington Addition burned last night. Firemen from Monroe fought the blaze about two hours before bringing it under control. Occupant was Matthews Butcher, a Negro, owner Guy Fletcher. Engines 2 and 3 answered at 7:54 p.m. and returned at 10 p.m.
Monroe will host a lecture by Matt Cvetic, famed for his FBI communist exposure, sponsored by the L B Faulk Post American Legion. He will speak at Neville High School auditorium at 8 p.m. on October 28, with a likely nominal admission and strong radio interest across Louisiana.
H E High Johnston 48 a Mississippi Game and Fish Commission supervisor was killed when his car smashed into a moving Gulf Mobile and Ohio train near the Waynesboro station about 8 49 am. He died en route to Laurel hospital. Johnston supervised districts including Scott Newton Clarke Wayne Lauderdale Jones Smith and Jasper. His home was Sebastopol.
SFC Guy Vickers, 28, of Monroe, a key member of the 46th Engineer Construction Battalion at Camp Polk, commanded Company B in building a bridge over Drakes Creek during Army Training Tests. Vickers, an experienced arm engineer, has served nine years and crossed two oceans.
