Blizzard and freeze devastate multiple states with deaths

The Associated Press reports a brutal blizzard and cold snap sweeping Colorado and Wyoming with 60 mph winds and up to 18 inch snow drifts causing at least seven deaths. Frigid readings appeared as far as Minnesota and Iowa with heavy rain and tornado impacts in Iowa and Illinois. Rescue crews cleared debris in Belmond after a Friday killer tornado, while Texas and the Rio Grande Valley saw flooding and roof collapses.

Blast Rocks Tourist Boat Off Paradise Island

An explosion aboard a glass-bottom boat near Paradise Island Nassau injured 17 passengers, at least five Americans among them, with second-degree leg burns. The boat exploded as ignition was turned on before departure, sending flames into the air and forcing passengers to jump or swim to the dock. Authorities treated victims at Princess Margaret Hospital and as yet have no cause.

Coolness Feels Across Midsouth With Cool Friday Night Front

A cool front moving into the Midsouth late Friday night kept Saturday temperatures low. The Monroe area saw 0.58 inches of rain in the early morning followed by a high of 70 at 3 p.m. and a 52 degree low at night. Highs and lows from last year were 84 and 60. Expect cooler weather through today with highs 68 to 74 and tonight’s low 44 to 50. Winds 5 to 15 mph.

Michael Haddad Home After Surgery in Monroe

Michael Dennis Haddad, 21, is home at 1002 North 6th Street, Monroe, after surgery at St. Francis Hospital and is described as doing fine by his mother Rose Haddad. He entered Wednesday and returned home Saturday. Cadet Tommy Rowland Cooper of Monroe competes in cross country at Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon Tennessee, son of Col. and Mrs. E Cooper of 105 Roselawn in Monroe.

Department For Travel Is Created

Washington AP A new Cabinet department to oversee the nation's land and air transportation came into existence Saturday with President Johnson signing the bill. He urged Congress to reconsider omitting water transport. Johnson said a strong, best-equipped leader will head the department and noted transportation is the nation's biggest industry, involving one of every five dollars in the economy. The signing drew officials, industry reps, Congress members and 30 mayors who urged inflation control. Johnson previewed a six-nation Pacific tour and highlighted plans to untangle a government-spread system of 31 agencies and bureaus.

London AP reports Canadian warship locating the Puffin, a 15 foot rowboat, capsized and empty in the Atlantic about 600 miles southeast of Newfoundland. Britons who set out to row from the United States to England nearly five months ago are missing. The Puffin log dated Sept 3 notes not rowing due to a north northwest wind at Force 2.
