New Orleans October 8 The deaths of Joseph Baker and Joseph C Zahner from gas accumulation in the hold of the steamship West Neris on September 26 were accidental. Baker a customs laborer died during a routine inspection and Zahner second officer died while trying to rescue him. Gas from bones in the hold caused the fatalities per a coroner’s report and inspectors Samuel O Larche and James B Cobb found no fault by licensed officers.

West Monroe houseboat shooting claims life
N D Mathis about 48 of West Monroe was fatally shot by A L Cousmans about 70 at Cousmans houseboat on the Ouachita river opposite South Riverfront street. Mathis died at a local hospital.
