Union Parish conducts labor survey in Farmerville to recruit workers for a national garment maker’s potential factory. Local leaders expect larger turnout next two survey days with buses arranged from Monroe and nearby towns to aid registration.
A historic photo set highlights an extremely low water level in Bayou DeSiard. The upper image captures a calm stretch normally free of debris and obstructions, illustrating the unusually shallow conditions.
About 45 Ouachita Parish students were pledged to social sororities at Northwestern State College this fall. Acting dean of women Mrs. Louile Mc Hendrick announced the new pledges and their chapters include Sigma Kappa with Margaret Louie Casey and Linda Sue Wallace of West Monroe and Dianne Goza of Monroe, plus Sigma Sigma with Mary Ellen Francis of Monroe and Brul Carter of Bearmont. The event also noted Southeast Arkansas singers and a local quartet will attend, with the public invited.
Two persons sustained minor injuries in separate Monroe area accidents on Saturday. Mcclenry Jackson, (Negro) of Mcclenry Jackson Street, was treated for minor injuries after a collision at Grammon and Jackson Streets with James F. Smith of Monroe. Mrs Ruth D Lang, 57, Newellton, suffered facial lacerations and possible neck injury after being struck on Louisiana Highway 15 by Billy Caldwell of Monroe. Lang was rushed to St Francis Hospital. troopers cited her for failure to yield right of way.
A 19 year old, Parnell Stockstill of 502 Bros Ave, suffered second and third degree burns when his clothing ignited while attempting to start a gasping ice cream truck on Pine Street. His companion Jimmy Whiting ripped off the burning trousers and helped extinguish the flames before rushing him to St Francis Hospital. Truck No three from the Monroe fire department later extinguished the hood fire.
Special congressional report notes John McKeithen vows to protect women’s rights in family homes by requiring both spouses to sign deeds. He attacks ex governor Kennon’s circle, predicting voter rejection of their four year agenda and pledges sweeping government changes if elected.
Morrison, campaigning in Bellerose Louisiana, labels the Sunshine Bridge an example of state debt without pledged credit. He urges a constitutional amendment requiring a two third vote to incur state debts, framing current administration as wasteful and costly.
Gillis W. Long accused Shelby Jackson of keeping Louisiana top in illiteracy for 16 years. He criticized Jackson and pledged a major anti illiteracy push using television for adult basic education. Long said he would name a new education superintendent, likely on Monday.
Sylvia Sharbono was chosen as chapter sweetheart by Holly Ridge FFA members. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Sharbono of Rayville. Chapter advisor C. K. Calloway says Sylvia will represent the chapter as a candidate for State FFA sweetheart at the state convention.
