Dr Francis P Gaines president of Washington and Lee University will visit Monroe on Saturday November 22 from 10 30 a m to 7 30 p m as part of a southern tour urged by alumni led by Fred Millsaps and James Sparks. A luncheon on Hotel Virginia roof at 1 p m will feature Gaines followed by a boat ride on Gov Noes boat leaving South Grand street dock at 3 p m and returning by 5 30 p m. The event aims to renew contacts and interest in the university with invites extended to alumni wives and guests.

Death of Major Elzie Reppond in French Foreign Legion News
North Africa reports the sudden death of Major Elzie Achand Reppond Jr. 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elzie Reppond Sr., of Monroe. A native of Ouachita Parish, he rose from private to major in about a year with the Legion in Tiznit, French Morocco. Planned return for burial in Monroe, with Veterans of Foreign Wars and Red Cross aid. He had earlier served in the Marines and Merchant Marine before joining the Legion in 1946.
