A 55-year-old man named W. F. Cooper, living on the Layton place, died after being struck by an automobile near the Magenta plantation on DeSiard road. Dr. Irving J. Wolff, coroner, identified the victim, who left a wife and son. A second unidentified man, about 50 to 60, was fatally injured on DeSiard road near Spanish City when hit by a vehicle driven by R. Downes of Rayville. He died at St. Francis sanitarium after a fractured skull. Police say the car, traveling about 40 mph, struck him as he walked, with the victim carrying a new broom and wearing hat initials C. J. H. The driver attempted a U-turn to avoid the impact. The broom likely came from a local store but checks found no purchase link.
