E. D. McGee a 59 year old produce dealer of 214 Peach street was struck on Jackson street near Peach street yesterday afternoon by a moving street car. A wheel passed over his left foot resulting in amputation at St Francis sanitarium. He also sustained cuts to his right foot hand and wrist and remains in grave condition. Motorman D A Moore applied brakes but could not avert the injury.
Two tornadoes struck north of Muskogee Oklahoma late today near Porter and Wagoner injuring several people. Mr and Mrs Twig Johnson were hospitalized with critical condition after their five room home collapsed. Two others were reported hurt at Porter as the storm damaged farmhouses and barns over 25 to 30 square miles.
Governor O K Allen launched his bid for the Huey P Long unexpired Senate term in Ruston La addressing about 1 2 persons including ~200 Black attendees He backed the state administration ticket and defended a law giving the state control over teachers noting he would stay active in Louisiana politics even if elected to the short term He attacked the Sandlin Dear anti Long ticket and justified the education law as a bid to control the state school system He denied that any teacher had been harmed or dismissed as a result.
A police raid halted an annual Society of Illustrators exhibition drawing 800 attendees including artists editors and professionals. Five girls were arrested on indecency charges after a complaint filed by Miss Jeanette Cice. Rube Goldberg called the raid an insult while Fred G Cooper defended the show as risque but not indecent.

For week ending November 2 1940 194 425 placed to work vs 121 715 prior. total jobs in place of direct relief 1 737 610. Hopkins cut direct relief in four states Ohio South Carolina Mississippi and Connecticut and noted allotments end for 17 states.
North Louisiana braces for a sharp cold front after weeks of warm weather. The forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with showers in the north and central areas this Sunday and Monday, followed by much colder conditions. The cold air is expected to reach Arkansas tonight with subfreezing temperatures forecast in the region.

Miss May Saucier twenty six a refining company employee was shot four times in the back as she stepped from a bus at St Bernard avenue and Industry street in New Orleans. Police seek a man in a brown suit with dark hair said to be her estranged sweetheart also employed by the same company. A second bus driver added details matching the description.
Pan American Airways 62 ton China clipper lands in San Diego bay at 4 30 p m PST completing a 1660 mile non stop flight from Acapulco Mex in 12 hours 12 minutes under Capt Edwin C Musick. The giant ship berthed at the naval air station en route to Alameda to begin Pacific service. It will proceed to San Pedro tomorrow then depart Monday for Alameda as base for trans Pacific planes starting November 22.
John Barham aged 48, a well known Oak Ridge man, died last night at 8 o clock in a Monroe hospital where he was taken yesterday afternoon. The funeral will be at 11 this morning in Oak Ridge cemetery. He is survived by his widow, his mother Mrs Ada Barham of Oak Ridge, four brothers Tommie Eugene Earl and Gray Barham of Oak Ridge, and a half-brother Emmett Mott of Oak Ridge.

Two Vicksburg youths died and three others were injured when the car they rode in went off a road ten miles east of Rayville after returning from a Carr Central High versus Neville High football game. Albert McCauley and Fred Joseph died. Willie George and L. S. Wilson were critically and seriously injured, with Donald Price slightly hurt. Funeral for McCauley scheduled today.

Baton Rouge November 9. State superintendent T H Harris announced he will personally appear before the legislature next year to seek repeal of the Huey P Long era school law that created a state budget committee with power to hire and fire teachers. He said the political features would not be used and voiced opposition to state supervision over local school boards. He noted no school employee has been dismissed by the budget committee since enactment.
