New York November 5 The nation’s business marks a fifth month of recovery with employment rebounding to over a million and factory payrolls rising as plants speed up. October reports show the building industry far above 1937 levels with heavy construction awards the largest since 1929. The AP index of residential building has more than doubled from the 1938 low, while the overall Industrial Activity index climbs about 27 percent from the year’s low, signaling a robust revival in late 1938.

Fatal Truck Crash in Ruston Kills Raymond Ballard
A coroner's jury will probe the fatal collision that killed Raymond Wesley Ballard 25 of Ida. Ballard drove a westbound empty truck into a bakery truck at the California avenue and Trenton street intersection. He died at a hospital about an hour later. Dr Edwin Lewis Stephens 65 longtime president emeritus of Southwestern Louisiana Institute died at his New Orleans home after illness. He led the Lafayette school 25 years retiring in 1938 and began the institute in 1900 with 148 students. Funeral set for tomorrow at 8 40 am in Natchitoches birthplace. Surviving widow and daughters include Mrs Frederick Hardi Mrs Corstin Mastin and Miss Margaret Stephens.

Lloyds received reports from Aguilas Spain that the 996 ton British steamer Eleni was bombed and set afire leaving the vessel a total wreck. The crew was said to be safe.
