The Victory Over Polio campaign moves into its final stage in Ouachita Parish and twelve surrounding parishes. Type III Sabin oral polio vaccine will be administered during the mass vaccination effort.
Mangham resident Louis O. Boughton dies in a house fire likely caused by an explosion. Firefighters from Rayville and Winnsboro fight the blaze as his wife escapes unharmed. Funeral services set for First Baptist Church with burial at Gwinn Cemetery. Survivors include his widow a son a daughter brothers and sisters. Pallbearers will be church deacons.
Cloudy skies cover the Twin Cities with a slight chance of afternoon thundershowers. Highs near 84 to 88 degrees, lows around 65 tonight, after a Saturday high of 88 and a 68 degree low. Easterly winds 8 to 12 mph.
Ramblin John Spencer Stone of Monroe is among 658 seniors applying for bachelor degrees to be awarded at North Texas State University May 31. Commencement at 8 p.m. at Fouta Field lists Stone as a candidate for a Bachelor of Science in Education. Airman Second Class William A. Lewis Jr. of Monroe completes Air Force radio equipment repair training at Keesler AFB Mississippi. He is assigned to a permanent base for his new specialty. He is Neville High School graduate and former Northeast State College student. Robert L. Gill of Monroe is among the cadets promoted.
At Port Everglades 759 Cuban refugees sailed to freedom aboard the American Surveyor led by Primitiva Nunez Rodriguez a 102 year old great great grandmother who wielded a machete in 1895 Cuba’s war of independence. She said I know nothing of this Fidel and came to see her son while others recounted family threats and exile stories amid a steady stream of arrivals since December.
Washington reports say the United States Britain and West Germany warned the Soviet Union NATO would deploy nuclear weapons in Europe to deter Soviet rockets. The three notes rejected Moscow protests and asserted NATO’s right to protect member states.

At least 27 people including men women and children drowned when a farm workers bus collided with a light truck and plunged into the Hillsboro Canal near Pa hokee Florida. Divers recovered bodies from the canal and wreckage while four victims were found in the canal. James Sconyers 34 faces manslaughter and improper passing charges with bond set at 2300.

Two American climbers Allen Auten of Denver and James Corbet of Jackson along with four Sherpa guides were blown 100 feet down Mount Everest at Camp 4W by 80 mph winds. All six escaped injury and planned to continue toward the summit with expedition leader Norman Dyhrenfurth reporting the crash amid tents and a near vertical slope.
Astronaut L Gordon Cooper returned to U S soil in Hawaii after orbiting the Earth 22 times aboard Faith 7. He told Gov Burns he is ready to go to the moon and described catching moisture in weightless air to drink. He embraced wife Trudy at Hickam AFB as crowds cheered.
Cape Canaveral gears up for Maj. Gordon Cooper to receive a hometown style reception with brass bands parade and red carpet. Mayor Marshe notes the town pride as Cooper returns from his Faith 7 mission after 575000 miles of spaceflight. He will travel by motorcade from Patrick Air Force Base to Cocoa Beach and undergo a medical debriefing before a news conference.
