The United States on May 6 blacklisted 38 Irish firms and businessmen accused of aiding the enemy. Officials say many entries carry Irish or German names and are linked to Axis support, with sanctions including denial of facilities and postwar penalties. Westafer 25 from Minneapolis Minnesota and Cadet George M Wallace Jr 20 from Shreveport Louisiana perished nine miles northeast of Rio Grande City.
In Chicago on May 6 officials for Montgomery Ward and Company questioned the validity of a National Labor Relations Board election at a Ward plant. The dispute centers on employees being government workers under President Roosevelts seizure order and a possible NLRB exemption. A ruling on a government request for a temporary injunction was postponed from Wednesday to Monday.
General Hershey said the draft will ease as men under 26 will fill quotas through fall. He noted army personnel strength can be maintained with the 26 through 29 group and that demands for draftees have dropped despite earlier expectations. Selective Service spokesmen confirmed no shortage outside 18 to 25 and draft boards resist inducting men over 26 in essential civilian work.
Baton Rouge May 6 The opening of the Louisiana legislature follows a standard routine. Lee Laycock will call the house to order swear in members and nominate a speaker with Norman Bauer a leading candidate endorsed by Gov elect Davis. The senate elects a secretary and president while a joint session will proclaim election results and name Davis and Verret.
Manship editor and publisher of the State Times and Morning Advocate leaves Baton Rouge for Washington to take a post as London director of the office of censorship. He plans to be away about a year as C. P. Liter becomes editor in charge with Herbert S. Benjamin as business manager.
American Liberators and Marauders dropped 1000 tons of explosives on landing beaches near Britain while a US fleet of bombers hit five Romanian rail hubs handling German traffic to the Russian front. Allied air forces hammered Pas-De-Calais targets near Calais Dieppe Boulogne andRo aring over Romania struck Brasov Pitesti Craiova Campina Ploesti Turnu Severin in the Danube region.
Chicago police disclosed a photo of a woman who lived with a man identified as John Lopez at a hotel. The nearly nude body packed in a trunk was shipped from Chicago to Los Angeles. A handyman reported bloodstains, and hotel records showed a Mr and Mrs John Lopes checked out Sunday.
U S military reports 87 tons of bombs dropped on Ponape by air forces from Pearl Harbor. The strikes, part of the 67th land based bombing raid since February, focused on Ponape town and docks while fires and explosions were observed. Truk and nearby targets also faced carrier and battleship shelling in related operations.
