R Wooten was acting postmaster of Monroe and is expected to receive commission this week to assume new duties. He will replace A A Thoman whose term expired November 19. Wooten, longtime Monroe resident from Georgia, has served on the highway commission and the state health board.
L C ey former district manager of an insurance firm died from a bullet wound in Pontotoc Mississippi police believe the act was self inflicted. Ey and his wife and 15 year old daughter had returned home from a trip and he then shot himself in his car outside the house. Mrs Harvey noted recent financial reverses since his resignation to become manager of Oxford Supply Company three months ago.
Attorney General Gaston L. Porterie of Louisiana is recommended for expulsion by the state bar ethics committee. He has appealed and received 15 days for specification of errors. The executive committee will review the case in New Orleans next month after considering evidence.
Relief agencies moved into storm swept areas of Alabama with medicines food and clothing as residents began rehabilitation. The death toll stood at 22 with possible increases among the injured while Helena Bible county Brent Demopolis reported casualties and guardsmen set up tents for shelter.
In New Orleans on May 6 the first group of 104 indicted for an alleged international liquor syndicate was tried. Five of 35 men were found guilty of conspiracy to violate prohibition law. 12 were acquitted and eight released for insufficient evidence. Convicted defendants include Albert Morrison Leander Necaise Joseph O Neal and Felton LeBoeuf. The government said the ring stored Canadian liquor in Central American warehouses and shipped it to the U S via Gulf ports and rail. Six unconvicted defendants were among those linked to unloading liquor from boats. Trial of the second group begins Monday.
Petit Parisien said a Washington general adjustment plan for war debts had been submitted to France. It reportedly calls for a lump sum settlement with reduced interest paid as a single annuity in three parts: one third in gold, one third in immediate certificates, and one third in later Bank for International Settlements certificates.

In Minden Louisiana on May 6 authorities pressed charges of attempted larceny against two women and three men who posed as American Legion relief workers from Monroe and Shreveport. Police said they wore Legion bands, packed donated clothing for tornado victims, and were not authorized by Legion officials to represent it.
Paul Oakley, a self-styled divine healer, was convicted of the murder of 3 year old Bernice Clayton in Linden Texas. A 12 man jury deliberated about seven hours before returning guilty. Oakley faces a 50 year sentence and a motion for a new trial with possible appeal to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin.
In Tallulah on Saturday morning Ivanak, an employee of Glen Mary Dairy farm, was attacked at Guenard-Lucas drug store. Cornelius Van Zelfden was arrested by the sheriff, released on bond, after witnesses said Van Zelfden fired a pistol, struck Ivanak with it, and delivered multiple blows before Ivanak reported the incident at the courthouse.
Washington May 6 predicted the farm relief bill with inflation and mortgage financing provisions likely to reach President Roosevelt for approval late Tuesday. The Senate is expected to drop the production cost guarantee amendment. John A. Simpson of the Farmers Union says defeat is certain due to administration opposition. Secretary Wallace calls the minimum price proposal unworkable and urges curtailing farm output.
Tokyo reports the Japanese government will inform the United States of acceptance of the tariff truce with reservations. The notification may come from Japan’s ambassador to Washington Katsuji Debuchi or Viscount Mukijiro Ishii, on his way to Washington for talks with President Roosevelt.
