The U S Embassy warned Americans in Czechoslovakia they may be expelled at short notice and held without access to consular officers. The circular outlined strict controls, discretionary residence permits, and frequent refusals to extend stays, prompting fear among registered citizens.

Pearl Harbor March 18 AP nervy skip per Lt William F. Adams and 40 crewmembers saved the navy net tender Elder from explosion during a week-long mid Pacific ordeal. All crew found safe 26 in life rafts after fire started March 10. Twelve remain aboard the charred ship 17 miles away. Admiral Radford commends all hands. inquiry launched into a transport’s failure to heed distress signals from the stricken Elder 700 miles from Eniwetok.
The Associated Press reports twin storms sweeping the plains and Northeast bring heavy snow and winds. Forecasters predict 30 more days of unusual cold for the eastern two thirds. One storm moved from the southern plains toward the Great Lakes with warnings of heavy snowfall, while a New England center lashed the region with wind and snow. Deaths occur in upstate New York as snow accumulates up to four inches. Concord New Hampshire records four inches with flurries in Pennsylvania and most of New England.

Toledo reports the death of five year old Richard Hady, son of a grocer, who died after a long illness necessitating more than 150 blood transfusions since infancy. Doctors injected about 20 gallons of borrowed blood, replacing his supply about fifty times.
Chou En Lai called U S Secretary of State Dean Acheson a mosquito trying to shatter world peace in a Peiping broadcast heard in London. He accused America of imperialist interference in Asia while Acheson argued the U S seeks no denial of rights or opportunities for Asian peoples.
An explosion and fire destroyed half a block in Statesboro on March 18 injuring three people and causing about 300000 dollars in damage. Firemen from seven towns and Savannah fought the blaze two hours. Kenneth Womack and Emmitt Anderson were trapped. Womack hospitalized with serious injuries and Anderson with minor injuries.
The Monroe Housing Authority announces bids for the first two projects under the 1949 Housing Act will open around May 15. The plan provides 50 white units on South First Street with 22 brick buildings and amenities, plus 76 colored units on North Texas Avenue area.

Benefits include cheaper freight, potential savings over 1.5 million annually, plus flood control plans and new dams at Degray near Arkadelphia and Muddy Fork near Murfreesboro, with power generation and extended flood protection.
Halifax March 18 AP The 114 foot trawler Gertrude de Costa from Yarmouth Nova Scotia collided with the inter island steamer Connector off Halifax harbor in darkness. Eleven of her 17 crew drowned all Nova Scotians except one from Grand Bank Newfoundland. Transport Minister Chevrier ordered an inquiry. One crewman Morton Tanner survived. Skipper Haslem Knuckle perished. Robert Parker survived after being at the wheel. Edward Tanner the cook described the moment before the crash and the rescue attempts.

They escaped by prying a window on the southwest side and sliding down a rope made from a torn blanket, the same method used in a prior breakout.
Washington March 18 Gen Muir S Fairchild second in command of the U S Air Force died suddenly last night at Fort Moyer Virginia at 55 after a long service career Born in Bellingham Washington on September 2 1894 he began service as a sergeant in 1916 later became a flying cadet and rose to air force vice chief of staff He served as a bomber pilot in World War I and held a rapid career progression thereafter.
District Judge E L Gladney will sentence Joseph H Ross tomorrow in district court for the murder of grocer C M Kitchens. Ross was convicted of murder without capital punishment by a 12 man jury on March 4, the verdict carrying compulsory life imprisonment. The judge earlier ruled the prior Rosa murder trial a mistrial when the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
