Manila reels as Typhoon Winnie brings 95 mph winds, drowning at least ten people and injuring many more. Central Luzon suffers widespread destruction as shanties collapse and infrastructure fails under the storm’s force.
Unofficial reports indicate seven drownings in the Manila area as Winnie the storm delivers heavy flooding and power outages. Communications blackout delays casualty reports while rains continue and winds subside, causing widespread damage and transport paralysis in the capital.
Communist guerrillas shot down a U S Army helicopter 35 miles south of Da Nang. An American pilot and gunner were killed while a US officer and enlisted man were wounded. The crash marked the third American helicopter loss in five days, increasing U S fatalities in Viet Nam to 244.
The Senate Finance Committee approved a bill directing the highway department to allocate 20 000 dollars to each of Louisiana's 64 parishes for road maintenance. A highway department spokesman said the funds are in the state budget and the bill merely authorizes the spending. Sen. Sylvan Friedman offered the move for a favorable report on the House-passed measure and the committee approved without dissent. Also favored a report on a House-passed bill to provide a minimum 125 dollars a month for school lunch employees. Gov. John McKeithen has written into his administration budget a raise for low paid state employees. The bill was recommitted to Senate finance a day earlier.
Washington AP Henry Cabot Lodge warned that the United States taking over active command in Vietnam would amount to colonialism and provoke anti American sentiment He spoke after a Senate briefing where he noted hopeful signs for the war but cautioned the situation remains dangerous and perilously close to broader conflict
Fidel Castro's sister Juanita Castro defected to Mexico claiming the Cuban leader betrayed the revolution and sold out to the Soviet Union. She described 75,000 political prisoners, shortages, and questioned $63 million in medicines received for Bay of Pigs prisoners while condemning Castro's secret police as Gestapo like.
Lea Stamper Thompson earned a perfect average at Louisiana State University this past semester. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lea S. Thompson of 1801 Oakmont Street. Six other Monroe students at LSU won Dean's List honors for the spring term: Susan Ferguson, Martha M. C. Shelton, Frances L. Smith, Betty Jean Campbell, Marcia L. Service, and Catherine J. Young.
Miss Edwina Patricia Hopkins of Monroe has won the Cincinnati Literary and Music Society piano award. The honor was announced during a Recognition Day program at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. A ram at Bernstein Park drew curious attention as it traveled near St John Street en route to the city zoo after a hernia operation, calmed by tranquilizers.
Cyrille Adoula resigned today on the Congo’s fourth independence anniversary. Moise Tshombe, long a rival who sought Katanga's secession, was widely expected to succeed him as U.N. troops, who toppled Tshombe in 1963, flew home. The departure left Congo marked by a widening leftist revolt in the east.
In Chicago Gov. Scranton of Pennsylvania and Sen. Goldwater seek Illinois GOP votes before the July convention. Harold Stassen also appears as a presidential hopeful. Delegates show 693 pledged to Goldwater, 138 to Scranton, with many uncommitted. Scranton challenges Goldwater to a face to face debate, which Goldwater resists.
Jacques Mossler 69, owner of banks in four states, was found stabbed to death in his Key Biscayne apartment. His boxer Rocky barked about 2 a.m., aiding time of death. Irene Durr, manager, heard the dog. Mossler lay beside a balcony door. His wife and four adopted children found him after returning from a ride at about 4:30 a.m. The family split time between Miami and Texas homes.
A silent unmanned jet fighter struck a Haverhill neighborhood early today and exploded into a ranch house, killing 10-year-old Todd Gifford and 8-year-old Pamela Gifford. Captain D F Sullivan of the Massachusetts Air National Guard ejected at 2,500 feet and survived, describing a ball of flame as the plane turned away. The crash started a three alarm fire damaging several homes and injuring none else seriously.

L C Franks of Winnfield Louisiana, a prize winning editor, says he has lost vision in one eye though doctors expect some use to remain. In Cape Kennedy, Florida premature shutdown of a second stage prevented Atlas Centaur from reaching orbit. In Baltimore Hodding Carter wins a Pulitzer. In Boston a psychiatrist denies plans to marry Senator Maurine Neuberger. In Washington the Air Force confirms a missing airman from a Bermuda collision, Sgt Edward Neal Jr whose Louisiana wife and Chester Pennsylvania mother are named.
The Coast Guard called off its search for Britt Sullivan who disappeared in shark filled Atlantic waters off Long Island late Sunday night after a marathon swim turned dangerous.
Three Monroe bus lines will combine on Wednesday as the start of a citywide revamp. Lov er's Lane and southside riders switch to Charity Hospital route with 30 minute service from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Consolidation aims to save about 52650 annually. A special team tracks changes over 90 days.
