New Orleans June 28 The Times-Picayune loving cup for 1940 has been awarded to Dr. Rudolph Matas world famed physician and surgeon The trophy honors long years of research inventions discoveries and charity practice spanning over 50 years The award cites his universal humanity and equal care for rich and poor He was born in 1860 at Bonnet Carre La and began practicing in 1880 and still maintains his office hours.
Governor Paul Johnson appoints James O. Eastland of Sunflower County to the vacant U S Senate seat left by the late Pat Harrison. Eastland says he will not seek the unexpired term and a special election date is pending. Eastland vows strong support for Roosevelt policies and aims for a notable Senate career.
Meigs O Frost a veteran New Orleans journalist was sworn in as a major in the Marine Corps Reserve and assigned to active duty as public relations officer for the Southern division. He will work from division office headquarters in New Orleans. Frost has long journalism ties including 21 years at the New Orleans States and recent work at The Times-Picayune. He earned a 1934 Pulitzer honorable mention and Sigma Delta Chi distinguished service award for exposing Louisiana political scandals.
The Senate approved a $10.38 billion Army appropriation, the largest in U S history, and sent it to the White House. A coastline chain of detectors and overseas bases will be built, with 500 volunteers sought to run them.
